Well, my cousin's son (I guess my second cousin) just graduated Basic from Fort Jackson yesterday, which I was able to run up and see him. Now he's off to Benning for OCS...going Infantry :D He's the 3rd oldest of 23 siblings  , and knows about hand-me-downs :) , so I'd like to get him a decent mid-sized fixed blade for his OCS graduation that I'll be able to attend as well later this spring.

I need to keep it under $200.00, and was looking for something along the lines of a 4-5" blade fixed blade. That size of blade is very usefull, and doesn't draw the disapproving looks and attention that a larger blade would on LBE/V. Here's what I'm thinking right now:

Buck-Strider
Mission MPK10 A2
BK&T Crewman (the most inexpensive, but still a great performer)
Fallkniven Swedish S1
Ranger Knives RD6...it has a 6" blade, but still a good design/price

I like SRKW, as I own a few, but they don't offer one in the size I'm looking for, I have both the HR and Desert CT...just need something in the middle.

Any other recommendations or ideas would be appreciated...again, I'm trying to avoid the larger "combat" knives for this go-around. This will most likely be his first "real" knife...

After he gets through Ranger School, I'll get him the ATC Tomahawk :D Thanks,

How about a CRK Shadow? They can be had for under $200 and they are very durable. Remember as an infantry officer he will be in Iraq or Afghanistan in the next 12 - 24 months, so give him something that he can bring to the fight.

smithd, good recommendation on the Shadow...and yes, engraving his name would be a great addition. Don't want it to become a safe-queen, but a good mid-sized user.

Several Doziers can be had for under $200. A KM-18 would probably be perfect except you'd have a long wait. Maybe pick up a Pro Guide from AG Russell and ask him not to use it to pry open crates. ;)

I started out Infantry, and one of the requirements is a stout knife that can take the abuse...I love Dozier knives for hunting and camping (small chores), but I'm looking for a good multi-purpose, mid-sized utility knife.

Either a Camillus/Becker Crewman, or a Benchmade 140 Nimravus would be excellent choices.

Beckers are great but a bit obtrusive. Camillus CQB line is slimmer but the same 0170-6C carbon steel, same black epoxy coating. You can get the larger BLACK-OPS CQB-3 at 5.75" or the smaller BLACK-OPS CQB-4 at 3.95". These are prybars but they do cut very well.

Make sure he has some kind of basic sharpener, maybe a folding DMT diamond hone, and a multitool.

Er... did you at least look at the KM-18? It's not a hunting and camping knife, it's in the military/tactical series.
