I need to balance my collection - something in the mid sized range is needed!

I love my SJTAC and think something around that size would do nicely !

Recommendations ?

I think the Badger series is an awkward size, too big to be small and too small to be big.

How about the obvious - a BOSS Jack?

or a Tank Buster?

or a Hellrazor?

or a Sarsquatch?

Maybe a SAR4?

an ASH, maybe a Skinny?

SFNOs are awesome too.

or maybe the best - a DSF. sort of the same, sort of bigger. great blade, and a solid value IMO - especially for users.

Skinny ASH sounds perfect

Boss jacks are cool too.

What about the HG-55?

I've never been into the HG55s. Neat looking, but hardly the most practical.

BOSS Jacks and DSFs will be the best values right now, IMO.

If you're patient - a Sarsquatch can be had pretty cheap.

I love my .32 ASH, but a few others are simply better users if it matters to you. And in the ASH size - big fat 6" blade knives... - an SFNO is more comfortable.

Look hard at the DSFs. Sub-$300, and a whole lotta knife...

Good luck - you could hardly pick a better time to be looking...

What's a DSF compadre

Desert storm fighter.

I am in the same position with needing to get a mid sized user again. My Ash1CG got listed and sold to buy a KZII.

Then I unexpectedly picked up a BAD (not really looking but was a great deal, and wanted another one since I traded an earlier).

Then, when I am shopping for a Midsized, with cash in hand (Sold FBMLE because I have the KZ and Basic11 for big choppers), and the CABS gets released, so that was a must.

Now, I still need a mid sized user, but will have to wait. I now have the pumpkin GW, the tan micarta BAD, CABS on the way, and the KZII and Basic11.

I think the HG55's are great. The LEs have a wicked convex edge. They're mid sized knives with thick .25" stock, but the size (height) of the blade keeps the weight down. Its a quick tough knife in a small(er) package.

I love my BJ but I could do with a skinny version. For what you describe my vote would be for a Sarsquatch. Until I got my NMSNFO it was my go to blade. Love it, and it comes in thinner with better cutting geometry than lots of busse's. I don't tend to pry or bend my knives much so cutting ability ranks high. Swedge turns off some batoner's but I think batons are cheap and plentiful so who cares?

two of my favorites. best mid sized blades imo

Since you already like your SJTAC I'd suggest a BATAC since it has the same handle style. It has a slightly smaller blade- if you're looking smaller.
If you're looking for bigger TB, SFNO or NMSFNO because they have similar handle styles to the SJTAC.

The SARSquatch is 3/16" thick. Unless someone puts a piece of pipe on the handle to extend it, they are going to have a hard time bending 3/16" hardened steel.

Are you kidding me? On this forum that is like a red flag to some guys! Isn't there a fairly recent pic of some guy batonning with a DSF and putting a bend into it?

My point was that the squatch while thinner doesn't give up much if anything to its thicker brethren and cuts better to boot. Take out the swedge and choil and it would be my perfect midsize busse. As it is, its my second favorite.

The SARsquatch could very well be the most underrated Busse knife EVER!!! It may not be the best at everything, but it will do everything. Just my $.02.:)
