In average room lighting and/or to the naked eye does the black handle read as black?
In many of the photos it appears more grey-ish. Of course reflections can skew things.

It starts out looking a little grey-ish, but then darkens from handling and use.

The handle color can best be described as being grey-ish black from the shop, however it does have natural dark tones. I've found that treating it with a little mineral oil will create a nice dark black color which to my eyes is more appealing. Time in a sheath will cause it to lighten up where the handle contacts the leather.....easily remedied with a touch of mineral oil. Hope this helps.

I have this same issue with all handles, synthetic or wooden, in some sheaths. I wish more sheath makers would treat the insides of their sheaths, but it is easier to remedy with the synthetic handles.

As you can probably tell from my silly threads here and in the surls forum I am really circling back to basic black or simple tone combos like the black with black liner and red pinstripe monarch.

A midtech HB in black with a red or green liner would look pretty sweet too. I assume messing with the handles would void warranties though.

I thought Whitty at USA Made Blade was selling liners for them, but not sure on that warranty question...

I AM NOT SPEAKING FOR FIDDLEBACK, and someone from the shop might very well tell me I am wrong.

That being said, I don't think that removing the handle and putting in a simple thin liner would do void the warranty. More importantly, the production Fiddlbacks are tough knives; I sincerely doubt that anything as inconsequential as a liner would be able to damage the knife.

I saw the liners on USA Made Blade and thought they looked cool. I hope they bring them back. Maybe Andy and / or Witty will share their thought on liners, warranty and the incredible toughness of the production Fiddlebacks.

I do not recall warranty voiding coming up in the discussion. It does seem like I recall something along the lines of there would be things like liners and such with some of them from the forge also at some point in time.

If any touch of a rotary machine hits the blade, that will void the warranty. Installing pre-cut liners will not void the warrranty.

That is as I expected, but was hesitant to say for sure. Thanks for clarifying Phil

We did sell liners for the Bushfinger for a while. They sold well but were not worth it for us on the cost end. Our maker was not making enough off them and we were not making enough either. We both felt going up in price on them would price them out of the market.

I will check with our maker and see what we could possibly do on them moving forward.

I was able to score a set of black liners for my production bushfinger while Whitty had them and found it to be a great improvement in feel for XL glove hands. Incidentally I did have to mess with/rearrange the scale screws a bit as one of them was almost too small to catch enough threads with the liners installed. I added some Loctite and have not had issues with them loosening.

Thanks gents.
Been waiting a bit over a year to get my next fiddleback. If I can't find a monarch i think I will go for a midtech hb. Seems like a tough blade great for edc. Just really want a monarch, size is perfect. Seems next to impossible to catch one in the spec I want.

After getting to check out Andy's personal Monarch I have been watching for one in the right configuration for me too. I think I want one with bolstered curly oak or similar for that style of knife. Some lighter brown wood is all I really have in my head, and a tapered tang on 5/32 or 3/16. But that said, I would love some lime green liners for a mid tech HB for me, and some pink or purple ones for my daughter's
