Now, I know we have come to the determination that the dot inside the inverted V was to signify a mid year production change of some sort. We came to the conclusion when discussing the 529's. I get that, but as I searched a few of the holes or honey holes as some call them,( not me because they never seem to produce honey) I found something interesting Buck 525.(DOT) and thats not a period. I have the exec. models inmy '89 catalog/fold out, so it can't be a pre '86 mark. Is this a mid year production change mark as well?

What do you think?

even if there was a production change and the dot signifies that change where is the date mark?

Virtually all of these are mysterious anomalies of one sort or another, MBJ......the answers are guesses.

In any theatre of mass production, odd things will happen and products will lack the usual markings or end up with unique markings--some are meaningful and some are random and meaningless.

Collectors like them, though.

Enjoy your Dot.

:)

Because this came out in 1985 before date mark use ( mid to late). I've seen this on the Buck lites, I think ITE posted a photo of one . A hypothesis, yes, but a educated hypothesis . Still, I'll admit one that could be all wrong . But I tried to help you . DM

That figures....every time I start to feel smug in my knowledge of all things "Buck", a knife like yours shows up to humble me! :)
From what I know, a dot after the model number on 500 series knives means that the blade was fineblanked now instead of forged. But I dont know when that happened for sure and...I dont know why a 525* blade is in a 826. Normally I could just explain it away because the 525 is the same as the 826 so the blades are interchangeable but, you cant re-blade a 826 since it has that acrylic overlay.
So why doesnt the 525* blade have the gold banner found on normal 826's? If they were just subbing in 525 blades to make some 826's, they still would have put the gold banner on it.
I think BG put it the best...odd things happen and enjoy your dot! :D

Thank you, now I'll have to look for another 525, because the 525 I thought I had, turns out to be an 826:confused: without the fancy banner. I dont know if I should feel blessed/happy to own a miss-match, so-so collectors item or bad for owning an 826 with out the gold banner??? What ever the case I'll enjoy the dot*

Thank you all for the conversation, this is the stuff we all love.:D

yes the "Buckness" of it all never ceases to amaze and amuse us ...
i have heard of companies that will from time to time in a year
let several "odd" things go out in the world ... these things are like
Easter Eggs to those of us that love to hunt and find them
but is it simple we jest love what ever they make but it is a joy to find
and oddty ...
Joe did some test to see how the line progressed and that knife is now
one of the oddity's that brings joy and a raised eye brow when found!!

Dave, do you know how often (or even IF) Buck does Rockwell tests and if they leave a dot like that?

Anybody have any pictures of Rockwell test dots on Bucks?

Joe??

I have mine tested often and the mark it leaves does not look like that dot . But different tester=different mark . Narfeng, has access to a tester at his company and it may leave a similiar mark ?? DM
