Last night about 11:30PM my wife and I were awakened by a loud thud. She thought a car had driven down our dead end street and crashed into the stream. I looked out the window and saw nothing. I checked that a tree hadn't fallen on the smithy or cars, and saw that the neighbor was backing into his drive. I figured he must have run over a trash can or something , or a car on the next street had hit a tree, and went back to bed. About 7:30 AM this morning there was a knock art the door. The police were in my front yard and wanted to know what I knew about the truck in the stream. A truck had evidently driven down the street with no lights, never hit the brakes, drove through my pampas grass, and plowed straight down into the stream ( a 12 foot drop from the high bank) wedging itself between the banks. The front was crushed, and the frame was really bent. No one was around. The wrecker really destroyed my pampas grass and the stream bank ( actually city property that I maintain and landscape). The owner reported it as stolen about ten minutes after the police showed up (what a surprise....and he only lives one block the other side of the stream). I am sure he was coming back drunk from the bar two blocks down, didn't turn the lights on, was high on grass ( there was a pipe and a tray of something suspicious in the cab), and thought he was on the next street...the one that goes through to his house..not the dead end that ends at the stream in my front yard. The truck is toast. The owner came when the wrecker was there, looked really sick and sad, but not pissed (like I would be if someone stole and wrecked my truck), was a long haired 30 something with tats all over. About 10 minutes before the police got there, the neighbor ( who at that time didn't know about the truck) saw a red truck come down the street, turned around and backed up to the stream, two men ( one long haired) got out, looked down in the stream walked around, and got in the truck and left. I bet he was saying to his buddy, "Shit, Fred, we gonna need a bigger rope!"
I took some photos . From the yard everything looks fine, except one pampas grass is laid down. The truck is between the banks and about three feet above the stream.
