Had the oppertunity to attend Ia Woodsmans, Midwest School of Bushcraft's Free Skills day (Was thru BCUSA)
Well, after a flat tire and a 30 mile detour, and Google maps directions taking me 15 miles in the wrong direction from IA Woodsman's place. I made it to the Midwest School of Bushcraft's Skills day,
Ia kept it small, there were on 11 of us total I believe.
I must say I had a great time, learned a little and got to meet a bunch of great guys. Most interesting part for me was realizing that One of the other guys and I knew each other! We had been in Boy Scouts together growing up and both have changed in looks so much that we didn't reconize one another! Small world!
I missed out on the plant id (thanks to the damn detour) but got in on the shelter set-up using gi ponchos as well as the BCUSA tarp.
Then IA got to play with a Turley Missouri, beating the crap out of it on some ironwood for a ridge pole, also showed alittle axemanship
We then went over some firecraft, there was alittle of everything tried, couple guys did bow and drill with some basswood gathered on site, several of us did flint and steel as well as firesteel.
Finding good standing, dry wood:
Showing how to safely break it into smaller pieces:
Fire prep:
And the guru pose!
Then went over some cordage making, showed basswood bark and nettle
Beating the pulp out of the nettle:
And the good stuff before twisting:
And I didnt get a picture of the cookies, but Terry, tell your wife they were awesome!
Thanks again IA for putting this on, I enjoyed it and meeting everyone as well. Can't wait until next time.
