Hi all,

I've been researching vintage "Spike Trade Tomahawks" especially as made by the French. I have sent an inquiry to the Rhode Island Historical Society regarding the link below : thread/picture of the WILLIAM DENNISON (Soldier French and Indian War) of Stonington, Rhode Island Tomahawk as used by Denison during the F&I War.

There is a nice Drawing of the Tomahawk located near the bottom of the linked below.

I also believe the following link is a photograph the Denison Tomahawk :

I would be very interested in seeing photographs of BF member's Spike Tomahawks that resemble these rather
small/light weight Tomahawks.

Thanks,

Spike tomahawk, inscribed “En[sign?] Wm. Denison 1760”

Despite its associations with Native war making, the Tomahawk was wielded by Colonial troops as well. While their steel and iron blades were generally European-made, as close-combat weapons these light and lethal hatchets also bear a relation to indigenous war clubs, some of which themselves came to be fitted out with metal blades and/or spikes. The Tomahawk’s ready adoption as a weapon by all parties in the contest for North American lands and resources underlines deep cultural entanglements between Natives and newcomers, even in the waging of war.

Hi Bon,

Nice Hawk there Bon! I have one made by Jarrod of H&B Forge that is pretty darn close to your Hawk. Well.....if I can prove/confirm that the Dennison (F&I War) Hawk was real/used during the
F&I War, I'd love to have a copy made from drawing (linked above). I'm hoping to find (Historical) photo/examples of the much SMALLER/LIGHT weight size Spike Tomahawks which were used mainly as a weapon.
I am still waiting for my buddy Ken Hamilton to find time to forge my Spike Hawk (something) along the lines in the following link or.......perhaps I will ask Ken to make a Hawk based on that Dennison Hawk. Now that would be cool!

His name is Adam Thiele. He is a mechanical engineer with a Ph D and is a professor at Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He is also a smith that produces edged weapons based on real pieces discovered throughout Europe. Check out his website. He has some nice stuff.
I also have one of his spiked war hammers on the end of a 36" long piece of oak dowel. I use it for a walking / hiking stick.
