Might need to add a Benchmade to the stable.

Hi all, I am looking for some advice. I have had a 707 sequel in the past and was thinking it might be time for another Benchmade. For reference to my tastes I currently rotate a spyderco military, ZT 0550 and a sebenza 25. I think I may have to get the quintessential axis lock again but am wondering which one? I just don't know if I am missing something that the Benchmade faithful think is a must have. Thanks for your comments!

Well, I am a knife noobie compared to the rest of the people around here but I am very impressed with my Adamas.
I don't know if you are looking for a folder of this size.
If you read my post " Adamas 275" you can watch a very good video on youtube of someone putting it to the test. I also linked a spreadsheet where he scores many of the knives he puts through his test. The Adamas so far has received the highest score.

The BM 581 is my favorite model. I think it's a great looking knife, I know it's a good slicer and is well built. M390 blade steel is excellent.

You seem to like knives on the larger side for EDC so I would recommend:

1. 710 - great blade to handle ratio and it is thin enough to disappear in your pocket.
2. 581 - M390 steel, a very stout handle that is good for large hands, it has axis-assist but it can be removed.
3. 950 - Strong reverse tanto blade, ergonomic handle, built for heavy use.

I also highly recommend the 940 or 943, very lightweight knives that disappear in your pocket yet pack a long useful blade.

Given the other knives you have I would suggest a 940. A classic Benchmade as Shane mentioned and you will hardly notice it your pocket as Erik stated. Might be a nice change of change of pace from the larger/heavier knives you typically carry. I have one that I have not carried for a while. Just reading/replying to this thread makes me think I will carry again in the next couple of days.

940 - I highly recommend this knife.

- Perfect for EDC (Not to big, not to small, sheeple friendly, flicks open like an auto)
- Great pocket carry ergos, you won’t even feel it, which makes it great for carrying everyday.
- S30V is great for EDC, if you can find a 940-121 (M4 version, even better IMO) - I’d pick one up

581, 950, 940/943, 810, 710, 790, 470 are all highly recommended, I have these and like each one. But go for what catches your eye.

If I were to narrow it down to three to begin with.. (1) 940 PE (2) 710-3 KnifeWorks Exclusive (3) 810 PE

Thanks for all the suggestions. The good thing is that I have a couple dealers near by to try some of these out. The bad thing is that I still don't know what I want:) I really like the 710 ergos and in general. I don't like recurves because I don't have the ability to easily sharpen them. However, The 710 has a gentle enough recurve that I don't think it would matter. One strike against the 710 is that I already have the 4" slicer niche filled with my Military. The 940 is intriguing because I currently don't have a smaller folder. I will have to research a few more but I think the 810 is a little big and aggressive. I really like the 581 for M390 but not for the axis assist (although as stated it can be removed). The search continues but I think I have some great suggestions and a little more knowledge to go check some out in person. I will update when I make a decision. Thanks again, keep the suggestions coming!

I don't know if your new to sharpening or not, but when I was a noob, I had trouble with the recurve on the 710, had to use the angles on the sharpmaker.. The 810 is a little more aggressive of all the choices (but has a very smooth opening, and you'll be getting a nice slab of M4 )

The 940 is in between in size which is nice, and they are easy to sharpen, I would handle one if I was you - but once you do, you'll see that they arn't all that small compared to the mini-grip or 707.. I was browsing BM's Facebook page and this pic led me back here..

My point exactly

I have the 943, and it is definitely one of the classic Benchmades that may definitely get passed down to my accidental children, but only upon my (probably hilarious) death.

By design, the 581 is Beckinsale-hot. BUT, add in the spring-assist and Kate Beckinsale quickly becomes Sarah Jessica Parker. Sure it'll work, but... Ew.

But that's just like, my opinion, man.

I guess I never paid attention to the MSRP on the 940. As much as I love it, $220 would have turned me off if I did.

But who pays MSRP anyway. :p

Already received good advice here; $220 is steep and not necessary, better deals *ahem* (KW/GPK) put $$ back in your pocket. Of the list Jastab provided I'd say: +1, very nice list of must-have's.

Best analogy I have heard in a while! Maybe I need to start naming my knives after hot women, clearly there WILL be one in the drawer named Beckinsale. :D

That is pretty funny! I take it you are not a fan of the spring assist huh? Me neither usually but I wonder if it is worth overlooking that attribute?
