I saw an ad for some of Mike Franklin's folders in Knives Illustrated. They look really interesting. Anyone have one or have anything to say about his knives?

brad1407:
The knives are made by Joy mfg,the liners are made of aluminum, unacceptable materal for a liner lock.
I still can not belive that Mike Franklin would lend his good name to such a P.O.S.

I have one of his custom LTF folders. Quality all the way through. Great construction and extremely smooth opening. A great knife.

I have one of his Hawg knives and it is really cool and well made. It is a big knife but opens, handles, and carries very well.

mike has been making knives for a very long time...he was one of the pioneers in the use of stellite 6k......He got me going on the stuff over 16 years ago....great guy, great knifemaker. dont think he is using stellite any more though.

Correction on the Joy/Franklin folders. SOME of the knives are aluminum. They are also available in titanium, and various other materials. The fit and finish is excellent. Hard to tell these are $40-$70 knives. For daily use the aluminum is acceptable when you look at the size and thickness of the aluminum. We had one customer who liked them so much he bought 8 the first time. Fine alternative to a Mike Franklin Custom. :)

The strength of the lock never came into question, the fit and finish were acceptable, however after 2 weeks of use the lock had worked it's way over to the other liner, not acceptable.
Aluminum is no match for hardend steel when it comes to wear resistance.
The only acceptable use of aluminum in a lock that comes in contact with steel is in a prototype that is to be viewed and not used
IMHO.
The Ti models may be the gratest thing to come to custom knives in years but I can only comment on the aluminum as I have 2 of those.
No offence just my 2 cents.
