Mike Read PITS with a Compression Lock seems about perfect

In the hopes that Sal Glesser might read this, I would love to see a knife like the Mike Read PITS, the prototype of which was shown at the Amsterdam meet earlier this year, but with a Compression Lock.

There aren't any knives like this currently in the lineup -- i.e. sub 3-inch blade with the Compression Lock and a streamlined design with classic lines -- yet that combination of features is ideal in terms of packaging, strength, lightness, simplicity and elegance.

I wonder if there is much of a market for more streamlined models like the PITS (sans finger choil on the blade and without finger grooves all over the handle) that are smaller than the Paramilitary 2?

Personally, I would love to see more such knives and would buy them.

Compression locks without a handle material on top of the liner or Ti frame are uncomfortable as hell to use. It's an immediate hot spot maker.

Yes. If such a knife were produced, the assumption would be that the structure of the handle would be adapted to accommodate the Compression lock and built like the Paramilitary 2, with some material, perhaps G-10, over stainless liners.

Count me in, I'd buy one. I like the PITS design a lot. It's a clean design in a world quickly filling up with tacticool oddities.

I'd be happy with the PITS folder being released. I've been dying to get my hands on one. As for something like it with a compression lock, I'll wait for the ATR sprint that may be in the works.

I take it you were not a fan of the ATR. Personally, I'm not a fan of the compression lock, whether integral or liner. Still, given the number of folks asking for its return and the number looking for a ti integral PM2, I don't think everyone feels an integral compression lock would be uncomfortable.

I mentioned in a thread that I would like something on the order of a Cat with a compression lock. This is the same idea, a knife with a 2.5 to 2.75 inch blade and a slim knife, with a compression lock.
Sal's response was that it is an "interesting idea." Hmmmm.

I've held one, but never owned one. The first thing I noticed was the hot spot, right at the lock tab. I like the design, just can't find a comfy way to use it. I don't know whether many folks want it for a collection piece or for actual use, it's anyone's guess.

Isn't the ATR a self defence knife? Hot spots aren't a big deal if you are using it for that purpose. Now if you are going to EDC it I can see the concern.

Not sure if it is , but I have a different perspective and something might be getting lost in understanding here. If a knife is uncomfortable to use when doing light to medium cutting tasks, I am not going to want to carry that knife at all. I won't want to try and use it for self defense because if you have no comfortable way to handle the knife, it's not going to be useful or familiar to you in that emergency role where timing might mean everything. The grip is going to be that much more uncomfortable under increased grip, and if a stabbing motion hurts you are already defeating yourself right out the gate, not to mention throwing any training one might have out the window.

Man. I want an ATR!
I think compression locks are great! Sadly not many Spydies have this. It's a genius invention.

I completely agree. How do you find the Paramilitary 2 in terms of hot spots? Is it as bad as the ATR?

P.S. - An integral Compression Lock like on the ATR does not appeal to me for reasons you mention earlier.

Hi Matthew,

Anything is possible. At this time, we'd like to get the PITS out into the market place and monitor the reaction.

The Para2 fits my hand very well, the design on the back of the knife is vastly different. When the S90V Para2 came out, I tested it on double walled cardboard. I think I ended up cutting something like 300 linear yards in one sitting and I had a small mark on my palm, but it's understandable with that much cutting (2 hours straight).

Sal,

Thanks for the response. I look forward to seeing the PITS on the market. It's a great looking knife.
