I love small interesting & beautiful slip-joint folders that I can easily carry every day in my pant pocket no matter where I go. Picked up one last year from Mike Vagnino at BLADE http://www.fototime.com/21C5ED01C2A57C6/orig.jpg and another one this year:
Mike did the engraving which makes this little oval pattern single blade folder special. Nice job! See for yourself. OAL is 5 1/4 in. Blade is 2 1/4 in. Closed length is 3 in. Weight is 1.5 oz. - heavy enough to keep track of if sitting, getting in and out of the car etc. but light enough to never be a burden.
You'll see some Mike's more significant work in Coop's BLADE Show 2011 thread. Be sure and check out the new Vagnino "Everflush" back-spring design where-by opening and closing the slip-jointed blade produces no distortion of the back spring/spine! It is a very cool, and I think significant, innovation.
Mike operated out of the Artisans of Cutlery booth with Tom Ferry, Jon Christensen and David Lisch - the four Artisans. The work these guys do is uniformly high level. I also bought one of Jon's knives - a beautiful folding dagger of botanical inspiration (a sheaf of branches forms the handle with amazing damascus revealing branches, leaves and even veins in the leaves forming the blade). Coop shot that one for Jon which is how I found out about it. Being the 'runner' back and forth from the show room to Coop's studio, I went out and picked it up from Jon so it could be photographed. As the weekend progressed I tried not to think about it - tried not to buy it - you know the head-game of which I speak.
But I was not successful. David and Tom also had great stuff for sale too. I even got one of their T-shirts. Guess you could say I'm a fan.
I'm yammering on about this because I think the Artisans of Cutlery are pursuing a unique business model that concentrates their considerable talents in a nice booth setting at the show. Who-so-ever buys a knife gets entered into the drawing for a give-away knife. In effect I bought two chances and ultimately my name was drawn for it. I'll post that one in the future. You can't go wrong with these guys and they always have something for everybody from a style and design perspective.
