I ordered a knife from Mike Obenauf at Blade Show 2004, and I gave him the stag I wanted him to use on the knife. The plan was to pick it up at Blade 2005. Unfortunately I was just about dead broke and never made the show. I let Mike know as early as I could that I had a problem and had to put the knife on hold. Mike, a perfect gentleman said hed make it whenever I was ready.
In 2006 I gave Mike the go ahead. One problem, the stag I had given him wouldnt fit, luckily Kit had a set that did work. Thanks Kit.
Its hard not to make a comparison between an Obenauf and a Carson. Theyre both knives of exceptional quality. Can you imagine the knives Mike is going to be making when he gets 30 years of experience under his belt?
My Obenauf small Model #1 is a great design. I love the shape of the bolster that gives you the feeling of a guard. The bolster has a very subtle bead blasted finish that resists finger prints. The grinds are crisp and the movement smooth and firm. Mike also added some nice extras, filework on the spine and jeweled liners. Did I mention is has beautiful matched stag scales.
I honestly dont know how many more custom linerlocks are in my future. I think with my Carson, JW Smith, Art Washburn and now my Obenauf its going to be hard to top what I have.
Mike, thanks again for the beautiful work and your patience.
Kit, thanks for the stag, your friendship and for sharing your talent, not only with Mike, but with anyone who asks.
