Here in South Florida it normally rains alot.
In the Everglades the ground is rarely dry enough or there is too much underbrush to set up a tent. How functional and dependable are these hammocks?

Jeff,

I would especially like to hear your opinion on this subject, being as how you have spent a lot of time in similar areas.

Thanks

I have used a IMPS-Net from Brigade(www.actiongear.com), along with a G.I. poncho strung overhead with excellent results, however a better alternative would be a Hennessy Hammock. www.hennessyhammock.com

Thanks for the advice. The hennesy looks pretty good except for the price, I'm a cheap skate.

Exactly why I use the IMPS-NET and a G.I. Poncho and bug net. Wal-Mart used to sell a hammock that would roll up into a ball the size of your fist. Good gear. Blue Ridge also makes a good hammock. Ranger Joe's used to sell the G.I. jungle hammock. I've seen them used-they work.

I think i'll go with the G.I. Hammock. Thanks.

Hi Encycloatom,

Go take a look at this Hammock with attached musquito screen AND waterproof roof.
The nice thing is that it has a floor! entry closed by velcro

so no loose musquito net, it's fixed to the hammock as it the waterproof roof to the musquito net.

It's designed by a German outdoor shop that really has nice stuff and it looks like a very nice piece of equipement.

Go see:

The only drawback is that it costs about $110
It's packed size is about 10" x 15" by 2 " and it weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces and can carry weights up to 235 pounds.

Best scouting wishes from Holland,

Yeah, that is the hennesy hammock. I'd love to have one, but the price is a little steep for me. Maybe i can find one discount. Otherwise i'm going with the G.I. Hammock.
Thanks

Encyclo,
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT get a NON-mil-spec Jungle Hammock with the attached fly/mosquito netting. Got a cheapie knock-off from G.O. Lowball and spent a few miserable nights in it. What a P.O.S.!! Very unstable and no matter how tighly I strung it b/w trees, it sagged into a "U" shape. Could not find the "sweet spot" b/w stability and my butt dragging the ground. The mil-spec may be better (can't be any worse). By the end of my trip, I was using mine as a bivy sack. Overall, a wretched experience.

Jeff, what would you suggest?

That's the great thing about the IMPS NET. It's a net, therefore not hot. It is extremely small and light so you can always take it along. If you have the desire/opportunity to use it, fine, but if not, you haven't put all your eggs in one basket so to speak. I prefer to have the versatility of the net hammock and a poncho/basha sheet, along with a sleeping bag or poncho liner.

Jeff, have you read Jungle Snafus... amd remedieds, by Cresson Kearny?

Any way I am planning on buying one of these and am reading all comments with some enthusiasm.

I've got the IMPS net, too, but i can't rig it without my ass hitting the ground. It strectches too much. Any ideas on how to string it up? Thanks.

I usually string mine up about five feet high, and tight as hell. Works for me

.

Just picked up a cheap camping hammock at WalMart for 9$. Works great, no extreme IMPS net sagging. Long term durability remains in question.
