I'm going on a business trip next week, and really want to bring my small sebbie along for the ride.
The problem is that I don't trust baggage handlers for anything. I've heard more than a few instances of things going missing in checked baggage (if the bag doesn't end up in the wrong city that is)

Anyone take their CRK in checked luggage? If so, have any of you come up with any security measures to prevent straight out theft?

I took my Mnandi to Las Vegas for 5 days. Buddy of mine got married and I knew I would be in a tux. So I packed the dress knife and used it for the entire time.

I have seen people recommend that you separate the blade and the handles. Place the blade in the checked luggage and carry the handle. This way they do not have the entire knife steal. I have never done it but then again I have never had a knife stolen.

I have travelled with a higher end folder, but not a sebenza. I have a metal bar that runs through the bottom of one of my luggage bags. I used a couple of zip ties and attached it firmly to the luggage.

You can ask to have your bag searched and sealed by security, but stuff still gets stollen or the entire bag disappears. My advice, tough itout with a beater knife until you get back.

I put the knife in a sock, roll it and stick in inside a shoe to the toe. Then, I put another sock behind it. I have not had a problem, yet.....

I do the separation gig with my Sebenza and Mnandi. Works well. I reassemble at my destination right at baggage claim (except for London -- waited 'til the hotel room then :)), and I'm good to go. Benefit of the Sebenza's simple disassembly process.

I zip tie a spydeco closed by passing the tie through the hole in the blade and around the handle. Then I pad lock the knife inside my luggage by passing the lock through the blade hole.

I only travel with relatively inexpensive spyderco's. There is an old rule of thumb that I follow, if it would hurt to lose something then never travel with it. Forget losing just your knife, count yourself lucky if you don't lose your suitcase entirely. Plus gives you an excuse to buy a cool Spyderco if you don't have one yet. I recommend the Manix 2 :)

I seal wrap my bags @ the airport with one of these:

These are the older type of wraps though. You get much better machines these days, but something like this and I vacuum seal my clothes with my knives stuck into socks etc in one bag marked dirty clothing.

I just went to Florida and checked a Small Sebenza and a custom folder. First off I doubt most baggage handlers think anything of a Sebenza when they see it. I think you'll be allright checking it. Also the sock idea or disassembly both sound like good ideas.

The beater knife idea is good.

I have shipped knives to and back instead of risking it. I still have them.
It cost me $20. That is less than replacing the knife.

If you lose it, don't come crying to us.

Perhaps you could buy a knife when you arrive at the city, and ship it back to yourself before leaving for home. Would be a good excuse to buy a new knife.
