Well, I'm going to get a Spyderco Military, but should I get the CPM440V or the ATS34 version?

Is the 440V really worth the (considerable) extra cost?

Considerable cost? You are either a REAL tightwad, poor as a proverbial churchmouse, or buying from the wrong company.

CPM440V Military's can be had for $100.00 all over the place these days. The lowest I've seen the ATS34 models was $89.00. That's only an $11.00 difference.

I got my CPM440V for $95.00. If the Military in question is an old model vs. new model, then spend the extra money. If it's just a steel vs. steel argument, then buy whatever steel fits your needs. I have a lot of experience wrapped up in sharpening ATS34, but not CPM440V, so I don't know what one is "easier." Theoretically, the ATS34 model would sharpen faster, but the CPM440V would hold the edge longer. CPM440V is also more stain and rust resistant than ATS34. That's a bonus for me becuase I sweat like a horse and am very corrosive.

I would go for the CPM440V even at double the cost...IMHO its worth it! No steel on the planet gets as sharp and holds it as long as CPM440V.

I don't know much about the relative merits of the various knife steels, so I sought advice too.People whose names you would know told me to go with the CPM 440v.I did, and feel great about it.I needed to touch it up (about 3 minutes worth) on the Sharpmaker to have it as sharp as my Endura, which is just scary sharp.Try MJ&S Knives, or Bayou Lafourche for a painless price.

I am surprised there is even a bit of hesitation. Go for the 440V(plain edge), better edge holding and corrosion resistance(at least in my experience).
It really is not hard to maintain or refine the edge on the 440V, only takes me a couple of minutes on the DMT (extra fine) to maintain the edge.
Way worth the extra few bones, trust me.
