Military and AFCK now, or Sebbie later (or, how should I spend my birthday money?)

My wife and son each gave me a $100 gift certificate for the local knife store, River's Edge. (Are they great or what?)(My daughter, the Princess :p , got me a cool money clip. She's cool too.)

With the gift certificates plus a little extra, I could pick up a Spydie Military AND a BM 806D2. I want both knives, and feel that both fall into the category of must haves. I could do this now.

On the other hand, I've been looking hard at saving more $ and getting a large Sebbie. I'd have to wait a while for this.

All in all, I may eventually end up with all three knives. Or I suppose if the Sebbie ends up being my favorite, I may never get the Military or 806D2.

Any advise?

I've owned and carried a SpyderCo (Police model) and a Benchmade (CQC-7) in the past and thought both were nice knives, neither held a candle to my large Sebenza I've now carried for 5+ years now. All three have different things going for and against them, but I've never, not for one day regretted the purchase of my Sebenza.

Hope this helps,
B.

I'd go ahead and get the Military and AFCK now. They're both outstanding production knives and you'll want them both eventually, anyway, if you remain a knife nut that appreciates tactical folders.

As a large EDC, the S30V Military is extraordinarily capable. I have no experience with the AFCK but it too is well regarded.

The Sebenza is like a nice chronograph, a Rolex or Omega. Superbly well constructed, a pleasure to use and touch, spectacular to look at. Doesn't tell time any better than a Seiko quartz though.

A Sebbie is certainly worth the money, but you won't be under-equipped with the other two as you wait until you save enough for the Sebenza.

Since you asked here.., that indicates the presence of drool already... :)..., so I'd just go get 'em both now...

Immediate gratification is fun....:)

The Military and 806 are really in the same class but I like the Military much better, thinner carry, can't even tell you are carrying it.The 806 is thick and to me is uncomfortable to carry in some types of pants.
So with haveing had a 806 and still haveing a Military and lg Sebenza,I would say"Military now, wait on or don't get the 806, save for the Sebenza"

I have had two of the AFCKs and the Military along with the Para Military. They were all good knives, I really liked the Military and the Para because of the blade steel-S30V,great stuff, the lock was ok but it was not an Axis lock. The AFCK in D2 was Ok but I sold it off along with the two Spydercos. I have the BM520 in 154 and the BM Doug Ritter Grip. and I think those two are a lot better. The one draw back to the 520 is weight where the BM Ritter Grip is lighter in the pocket and it has the S30V steel and a blade that is wide and almost a full flat grind. The Ritter Grip is availabe from Aeromedix.com only. By the way you might want to check Cabels for the Grip. in D2. It all boils down to personal taste.

I own a 806, and it's very nice. I would reccomend it for sure. I have handled the Military at an NJKCA meeting, and altough I didn't like it's operation as much as the 806, the blade is very nice. I've also handled several Sebenzas and I must say that they were very nice. My ultimate advice would be to go and handle all three, and determine which one you like the best. Nothing beats handling a knife.

You have $200 to spend. How about the 806D2 (or an 805), and a BM 705 or 556 Mini-Grip?

I would get the Military and 806D2 now.... save for the Sebenza later. With the 806D2 and Military in your carry arsenal you won't need any other knives, as those two are most excellent.... so you will be able to save for the Sebenza.

I don't think you could go wrong either way. You could just buy one and then put a down payment on the Sebenza if your local dealer has a layaway program. I would get the Military myself. :D

How about a nice Benchmade 630 Skirmish, even has the nice frame lock like the Sebbie? I've owned a few Sebenzas, they are with out a doubt fine knives.I don't recommend carrying via pocket clip,I would say the sebbie deserves a nice belt sheath.Good luck with your choice, sometimes things are worth waiting for.

Even though I'm a big Sebenza fan I'd have to say get the 806 and Mil instead. You're getting two fantastic knives there. Many consider them the benchmark folder for their respective companies.

Take my advice: pick the one you like at first sight. ;)
For no particular reason, the Sebbie doesn't hit my fancy, so I'd pick the other two (at least one of them is among my favorites). ;)

I would also recommend checking out the Doug Ritter Grip. I haven't had a chance to get one yet, but it looks like a great set up. I have BM710HSSR, BM806D2, and a large Sebenza. The BM710HSSR has been my EDC, the BM806D2 is just a little to big for my taste, I'd feel funny pulling it out infront of sheeple. :) The BM710 isn't much better, it's a pretty ugly and scary knife, but it's been my EDC for years now and has never let me down. I find the Sebenza is to slow and clumbsy compared to what I can do with an AXIS lock knife. While the Sebenza is a great knife, I just find the BM710 is much quicker to deploy, close up, and I'm more confident in the lock. Also if I screw up the BM710 I'm not going to be as upset as if I messed up the Sebenza. :)

However, I really like the looks of the Doug Ritter Grip, it doesn't look as menacing as the BM710 or BM806, it's s30v steel, etc. The only thing I'm not sure about is how it feels and rides in the pocket, the handles look thicker than the handles on the BM710HSSR and BM806D2, maybe someone could compare the handles.

I'd go for the millie and afck now. I have edc'd both at one point or another and currently edc the military. The blade on the military is incredible and the handle is extremely comfortable.

You could also just choose which one of those two you like the most, buy it now, and then put the extra 100 towards your sebenza savings.

The military and afck are pretty much in the same class of knives, and you'll probably have a preference of one over the other, everybody usually does. Whichever you prefer will get carried, and the other will sit in the drawer, so you may as well just handle em both and get whichever one appeals to you more.

Thanks for the replies -- you guys are great! You've given me a lot to think about.

It turns out I just got a little extra in my last paycheck (found out today), so, with this extra money, the $200 certificates, plus some money I've stashed away, I could go ahead and get the Sebenza now, if I want to.

FWIW, I've handled all three knives at River's Edge.

I plan to go to River's Edge on Thursday night to make the purchase -- :D

If it were me the Sebenza is what I would get if for no other reason than it would be easier to come up with the cash for the others later.
The Sebenza is really a great knife. It did not hit me how close the fit is until I broke one down to clean.Great feeling when you have it down in all its pieces and can clean, lube and put it back together all in about 10 min.

I've owned and carried all three knives. I only own the Sebenza now! ...but of the other two, I felt better equiped with the AFCK.

If money is the problem check out the for sale forums. You can get a sebbie for a little cheaper and if you watch close enough you could get a steal on one. (Like $250 - $280) The condition doesn't matter so much because you can send it to CRK for a $21 refurb and it will come back looking new. I've got a large regular refurb that I am going to let go cheap($280) or send it to Matt Cucchiara for his meltdown and fizz treatment and then keep it.

FWIW, I was trying to sell my Military (SpyderEdge) and just traded my AFCK for a smaller BM. Both are a bit large for EDC at an office.

later,

Oily

Edit: oh, gift certs. Nevermind.
