I've had several Militaries and Paramilitaries, most came with uneven edge bevels that ranged from 10 to 25 degrees on either side. The edges were consistently very shallow at the base of the blade and got steeper towards the belly, a few tapered down again towards the tip. The one or two that I had with consistent and even edge bevels were ground down farther than it should be, and it looked even worse because you could see the original blade width at the base. A 'sharpening choil' would make it easier to get clean bevels at the factory, as well as hide how far the blade was actually ground down.

Hmm... I would disgree. A sharpening choil would cause a lot of snagging on material overall. It's been an issue with other blades from other manufacturers. If the blades were made 1-2mm taller the blades once sharpened at the factory would be a bit better on the bevels. Some of the models I own have perfect sharpening angles from the kick to the tip, others not so much and look as if they were done on Friday at 4:55pm.

If you want a sharpening notch or choil, it is not terribly difficult to add one...

If I don't want one, it is exceedingly difficult to remove one...

Exactly right. Leave my military alone please, and do as you wish to your own.

You got that right. Sharpening choil is an imposed design flaw which offers zero functionality. I have heard lots of folks give their reasons for sharpening choils but haven't heard one that actually makes sense yet.

Yeah, the only purpose I've found for a sharpening notch is to hang up in whatever I'm trying to cut. I'll pass.

Exactly.

I have mixed feelings toward sharpening choils. They do make sharpening a bit easier, but they also annoy the hell out of me by snagging when cutting some things. I know there are folks who claim they avoid that issue by sharpening the inside of the sharpening choil and turning into a single serration. Never wanted one bad enough to add it, never been annoyed enough at an existing one to try sharpening it.

I posted this the other day in a sharpening choil thread too. It allows me to sharpen the whole edge easily without any notches on the edge. One member here(unit), first did this.
