i just got a brand new spyderco military camo with black blade today. it has some side to side play and i tried tightening it but that made it too tight so is this a flaw or what? am i the only one with this issue? i always hear about it locking up like a bank vault and mine locks up more like my front door. my delica has no play and it was 1/3 the price which is my issue here.

This can be caused by having 2 washers on one side. Can you see a washer on each side?
Is the blade centered when closed?

Bank vault, yes...

What is too tight? I like my Millies on the tight side myself. On the Millies I have/have had there is around 1/4 turn of the pivot screw between too loose and too tight. The tolerances compared to affordability of the thing is an amazing thing to behold.

Do you know how to properly adjust a pivot? I've never had a knife I couldn't find the sweetspot on. When adjusting, you literally need to not even be able to feel you turning the torx bit. Such minute adjustments. keep checking for play and adjusting. If you're turning so much you can feel or see the screw move, that's too much.

SuzukiGS750EZ for the win!!!

You nailed it, very small adjustments are all that's needed.

Of the 3 millies I have and the dozen or so I've handled none had play or play that couldn't be fixed with adjustment. Its one of very few knives that I can say have ZERO play when properly adjusted.

thanks guy for all the help. it does look like there is a bit more space on the liner lock side of the blade buy only when its open for whatever reason. also it wiggles enough to touch either side of the handles when it is closed. so when i drop it i can hear it clank on the G10.

I would try to find the 'sweet spot' with a pivot adjustment, Wray. Where it is possible that the knife passed Spyderco's QC with a defect, it is highly unlikely. Either way, Spyderco will take care of you.

One thing that helped my get my Millie to where it had no play but wasn't too tight was to tighten the pivot screw ALL the way, as far as you can (without stripping it), then loosen it to where it feels comfortable. Like others said, very small adjustments are needed to get the perfect tightness.

and, on a brand new folder a bit of friction is perfectly acceptable, anyway even with some friction the detent on a milie is strong enough to let you "thumb flick" it easily. mine are all broken in but i keep them tighter than the sweet spot because they work great that way ....
