My older brother is a Marine in 2/5, recently deployed to Iraq. We got an email yesterday, in it he asked for "a Camelbak with pockets in the back, and preferably desert camo." We can't contact him about this (he only gets phone/internet once a week), so are there any military folks with any suggestions about what to get him, or what you used?

I have a civilian version of the MULE, but do you think the MULE has too little space for gear? I've seen some of the military versions, and they differ slightly.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thankya'll very much.

I just bought a mule off of ebay. It is a little small for what I wanted. I like to carry my rain gear at all times when I hunt and I don't think I will be able to get it in the main compartment along with a full bak of water. So I would say that the Hawg may be the smallest Camel Bak you may want to consider. My flyer lists it at 1100 cubic inches and 100 oz. water.

Hi All-

I've got a civilian M.U.L.E. in sage green. It has compression straps for when you load it up, but it should still be regarded as a minimalist pack. For dayhikes, small-game hunting, or motorcycling it is an excellent piece of equipment.

Camelbak is being heavily-endorsed by Giuliani Partners (as in Mayor Rudy) and does a great job supporting our men and women in uniform. The military versions seem to have slightly different configurations. Here are their offerings in desert camo:
Hope it helps,

I got mine from rangerjoes online. You would want either the hawg or the mule. The mule is the smaller of the two, and I would saw a better choice if he will be around vehicles, because you can sit without having to take it off. The hawg id more of a back pack/ assault pack. Remember not to get something too big because he will already have enough crap to lug around. They both come in 3 color desert.

I've got a black military M.U.L.E, and while it does have pockets on the back, I wouldn't say it has significant gear-carrying ability. However, with the packs the .mil guys are using in the desert, he won't need a whole lot of stuff....BDU's and his flack vest/web harness will take most of it.

Jump up one step from the M.U.L.E if you want, but I'd go with the M.U.L.E. Not too much bulk with the pockets, but it'll carry some extra stuff (maps, poncho, whatever) and 3 liters of water on-hand is a great thing.

Actually, my black one is up for sale; I used it for a week, and I don't think I'll have cause to use it again for years, if ever. If anyone is interested, shoot me an email.

Hi All-

Come to think of it, the military-version M.U.L.E. that I posted earlier looks more user-friendly than the civilian version I own. You don't get the elastic compression straps, but it looks like you get bigger zippered compartments and easier access to the water bladder...

hey guys
how are the new series of camelbaks?
i've had 3 (the artic something one, real huge and 2 waistpacks) and the construction on them is real shoddy
i've had the clips breaking on me, threads fraying etc

i've heard the new ones have better, bigger caps for easy cleaning
but my experience with them makes me leery

hope i can get some positive feedback here :)

Thanks for all your help...We bought my brother the military version of the M.U.L.E. from Ranger Joes.
