Military Deployment and Knives

Some background before my question. I have had two major hand surgeries in the last ten months and have required many hours of physical therapy. I have had a great therapist that has really helped my recovery. I found out yesterday he will very likely be deployed toward the end of the year. Now to my question for those of you who have been deployed. Are there regulations on carrying knives as part of your gear? Also if allowed, how prevalent is carrying a personal knife among deployed service members? I'm a big Spyderco fan and Militaries are my favorite. I want to give him a Military from my collection as thanks for his service and his help as a therapist. Gonna gift him a knife, regardless, just curious if he could carry it while deployed. All input welcome.

From other posts like this, many servicemen carry multitools. But a Military should be fine as well.

What branch is he in, what's his MOS or designator? It also depends on the deployment, is he gonna be boots on the ground in the ME, on a ship, a CONUS deployment, etc. All of those will have different needs and regulations for what he can carry.

As already mentioned, a multitool is always a good idea. FWIW I like the Leatherman Skeletool, it's not the most tacticool option, but it is really practical for what I do at work and home.

Army, that's all I know now, but I have another six weeks of therapy so my be able to get more insight. As for multi tools probably used my Leatherman Micra more than any other, never without it.

He will be able to carry a knife deployed or otherwise in the Army. Im sure he would appreciate the knife and the gesture. A good pocketknife is handy for anyone.

Cool gesture for sure. War Zone may be different than say a deployment to Europe for example. I know as a firefighter in the 70’s a Buck 110 in a belt sheath was standard equipment. Becoming an Air Force firefighter didn’t change that. Even stationed in England
that Knife was always present both on and off duty. Honestly not sure if i was breaking any local laws when i was out and about off duty.
Different times we live in i guess.
Love my Spyderco military so great choice!

The grand daughter of a good friend was recently deployed to Afghanistan. (Army engineers, MOS 12B)
She didn't have a heavy duty knife, so I gifted her a Cold Steel Survival-Rescue knife. Carbon V steel. She was quite pleased with it.

Very cool. Hard to believe but I have not known anyone directly to be deployed since I was in high school when many of my older sisters friends who I rode motorcycles with went to Vietnam.

I would assume “tool” knives he needs would be issued.

Of all the high speed, low drag stuff I’ve bought and been issued in 35 years as a cop, a SAK Tinker or Pioneer and a Spyderco Delica are the most used items I’ve ever carried.

A big heavy fighting/Survival knife is cool. A SAK Tinker he uses every time he opens a letter, cuts open a box, tightens a screw, opens a can or a bottle may mean more to him.

The Military is probably my favorite civilian carry knife. I'm sure he will love it. He will probably be doing something medical while deployed, as well.
I am a retired Independent Duty Medic, and I spent quite a bit of time in the Middle East. When I deployed, I preferred my issued Leatherman, (1992, still have it) and a 4" double edged, Western (1990), boot knife.

Glad to hear a quality multi tool is part of issued equipment.
