Ok, so I have a friend that expecting to be deployed soon. I am lookinf for some advice on a folding knife to give him before he leaves. Something that can take a beating, holds an edge good, easy to put the edge back when it's needed, and around a 4" blade. Around $100-$150 maybe a little more for the right blade. Any and all advice will help. I'm not a huge knife expert but I'm really trying to learn more about them.

Wait until he gets there. He'll ask around and he'll see what he would like, and what others use. Mostly SAK's and Leatherman, mostly to open rations. Extra weight and bulk is not welcomed. Depends on what kind of unit he's assigned to...
Thank him for his service.

Benchmade Adamas.

EDIT: Forgot, a portion of the sales go toward the Rangers Assistance Foundation, so that's a good thing!

Military is a good knife , but being deployed the knife is gonna get abused, at least my knives did on my deployment, and I just doin' t know that I would trust the thin tip of the Millie on a deployment, don't get me wrong I love the Millie and carry one in my edc rotation, I would check out the bench made 275 and benchmade 810 as well.

Just a little above your price point, but a Benchmade 275 Adamas would be a good choice

EDIT: ^^^Son of a #^£~{

Cold steel spartan. Costs about 60 online and is nice and hefty. Its on the heavy side at alittle over half a pound but it can take a beating

I carried a full size Griptilian in Iraq in 2006 - 2007. With a black blade and partially serrated blade. It served me well and that's what I'd recommend.

Benchmade Contego or Adamas.

Both very tough, very dependable, and can be had for under $150 each shipped.

Best of luck!

Leatherman as in a multitool or knife? I dont have any military background, so I just want to get my buddy something that he can use on a day to day basis. I dont know what would serve him the best. A good folding knife or a multi-tool.

Forgot to hit the quote for the post above.

Check out a Fox USMC Predator, but with the newer steel (NOT 420J). Pretty rugged knife. Good Grip, under $100 if you look.

Benchmade Adamas or Griptilian are great choices in or below your price range and should withstand a lot of hard use.

It depends on what he actually does. I'm guessing Sonnydaze was referring to a multi-tool. When I was in Afghanistan I carried a multi-tool and a CRKT M60. While it was fun stabbing junk with the M60 and using it as a pry bar, I ended up actually using the multi-tool for work way more often.

I would say the para military 2, I had mine in Afghanistan and I loved it. for a folding knife you really just want something small and sharp and that will disappear in your pocket, the only knife you should be abusing would be your fixed blade. realistically a folding knife will mostly get use to open mail, MRE's, cut paracord and flick open out of boredom.

I suggested a multitool or SAK earlier. I have not been in the Sandbox. A few posters here obviously have been. I based my opinion on previous threads on this subject. Here is one post...and several good threads.

I was really hoping for alot of knife discussion in this thread, I know most Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan had some kind of pocket knife or multi tool or both, On my last deployment which was Afghanistan, I carried a Spyderco Military, a Leatherman Core and ST200 for back up and a Vic Outrider. Leatherman Core saw the most use with the Military close behind, I did not carry a fixed blade.

Here are some relevant threads from the last few months:

Hope this helps. There are as many reco's as there are posters... I get the opinion that soldiers are carrying a lot of weight on their web-gear already, so keep it light. Most blades are used for utility, and small is good. Few are used for self-defense. Many get lost or "borrowed" so keep it reasonably cheap.
