hey guys I am a new guy to the forums but figured maybe I could get some help or guidance as to wether Spyderco would consider my Militaries faults as a warranty issue. A little background on myself, I currently own the following spydercos:

Military
Tenacious
Sage 1
Native 4 CF
Para D2
Para s30v
centofante 3
persistance
bug
UKPK green g10
rock lobster

the problem lays with my military which has been my most recent purchase. The blade is so off center it hits the g10 scales and has worn off the black coating on the blade. When I tighten the pivot screw to reduce blade play when open, the blade comes extremely close to the one scale and rubs even more. I looked at the washers and everything is in place, I even spent time unscrewing and retightening body screws hoping it would re level the handle scales. No such luck. I have never been more disappointed when buying a knife, and just want to have it fixed so I can enjoy the knife. I can tell if will be a great EDC when this problem is fixed. How can I fix it.

thanks alot guys

Eric

Send it to Spyderco. In my opinion, an off centered blade isn't much to be concerned about until it's rubbing the scales (and then, just because of potential damage to the cutting edge). A slightly off centered blade is fine on a user knife as long as the lock integrity isn't compromised.

Spyderco will make it right for you.

what is the warranty process.... do you have to contact them first or do you just send the knife ????

I'd contact them first.

My concern is you say that rubbing the G-10 is wearing off the (I'm assuming) black coating. This shouldn't be happening, that coating is some seriously tough stuff.

trust me its happening, it doesn't wear in streaks but you actually can see dots of bare metal where the g10 rubbing against the blade has exposed bare metal

did you buy it new? how long have you had it? what type of use has it seen?

i ask not because i doubt your story, but because another member recently asked about the warranty of a product and an allegedly questionable response from the maker. truth came out, and the user had abused the knife and was attempting to have it replaced/repaired free of charge.

if so, consider returning it to the retailer. that would be my first choice given a faulty product.

if not, you may have to send it to the factory if the seller won't provide you a refund.

i would also suggest not attempting to do any repairs yourself. it may be off center for a variety of reasons, and home repair could easily aggravate any issues.

i agree but it was off to begin with and i did nothing to hurt the situation, just curious as to my opportunities. It really pisses me off when you spend this much money for a knife and it doesn't perform. And yes I bought it new. I hope I can make this right, it really bothers me when this kind of stuff doesnt work out, especially when you devote so much of your paycheck to your hobby expecting perfection.

is this the black blade military you bought off the exchange forum over a month ago? probably a little late to ask the seller for a refund.

just call up spyderco and see what they say.

they can help you. we cannot.

I am very often amazed at how fast some people are to post problems like this on a public forum before even contacting the manufacturer to see what they say. Its not as if you are wondering if something is wrong with your knife. You know something is wrong with it. All companies have some quality control issues. If you had enough knowledge to post something like this here, I find it hard to believe you did not have the sense to look on spyderco's website and contact them. Not trying to bash you for posting, but come on. Who better to answer your question than spyderco themselves. If there is a quick fix, they can tell you. If there is not, they will have you send it in and take care of it.

You say this military is your most recent purchase. The blade is already off-centered and the black coating is already coming off? If you purchased it new then that just doesnt make sense. Spyderco doesn't sell knives in that condition. Where did you buy this knife? It may have been advertised as new, but to me it definitely has seen some obvious abuse. Theres no reason to get mad at spyderco for something they had no part of.

my NIB millie had the same problem with the off centered blade. I read somewhere on here that it had something to do with the pocket clip. mine was off but it didnt rub so i didnt care too much. i was at the movies one nite and when i sat down my clip caught the edge of the cup holder and bent upwards alot. i got home and used some needle nose pliers to get it back down enough to have a firm grip on my pocket. sure enough when i looked at my closed blade it was perfectly centered. fixing the pocket clip was the only thing i have ever done to the knife since i got it so im convinced it has something to do with it.

My Millie came offcenter, but not that bad. If you got it off the Exchange then you may want to ask the seller for a refund. Whatever it is Spyderco will take care of you.

I had an offcenter blade on my military...pretty bad actually. It was pretty easy to adjust the blade position though. I ended up loosening the pivot slightly and retorqueing the small screws on the g10 scales. You need a small hex key for the pivot and a t6 torx bit for the scales.

You didn't answer any of the questions that MORIMOTOM asked. If you're coming to the forum to get honest opinions then we need honest answers.

Why dont you send them an email or get their contact information from their website and call them? Take the matter directly to them and then post. You have great spyderco knives already and you should be familiar with their quality and standards.

Calling first can't hurt, but is not absolutely necessary either. You can just pack the knife up, along with a note clearly explaining the problem, your name and address (can't hurt to give phone # too), and a check for $5.00 and send it to

Spyderco Inc.
Warranty & Repair
820 Spyderco Way
Golden, CO 80403-8053

Assuming the problem is a legitimate warranty issue, the $5 check will be returned to you.

Do note this is the busy season for W&R, lots of knives sent in for sharpening by folks getting ready to go hunting.

Eric,
We can't make a judgment on warranty unless we can physically see the knife. Even with all their vast knowledge of our products, the members here can't make that judgment either.

Please send it in to W&R and include all of your contact information. I understand that you purchased the knife NIB, but did you purchase it from an authorized Spyderco Dealer? Unfortunately, I can't tell you the number of times we've seen "NIB" turn out to be not so new.

We would appreciate the opportunity to make it right if we can.

Kristi

no I didnt buy it from a dealer. I bought it from someone here on the forums but the knife was NIB condition. I emailed Spyderco and they said they will treat it as a warranty issue and will fix it which is awsome.

Please post about your experience in GBU. Obviously the person who sold you the knife is less than honest and other members need to know about it.
