Military hardware soft?

Hey all. I have a Cruwear Millie that's been my EDC for about a year now. After disassembling it maybe three times and noticing I have to be super careful because the screws are so soft and now having 3 that are completely rounded out I figured I'd see if this was common. Did I maybe just get some that was off? Will Spyderco fix it? Thanks

I bought a used Millie with beat up handle screws. Emailed Spyderco to see if I could buy some. They emailed back and said they don't sell them but were going to send me some free screws. They did advise me that they dont recommed disassembly and also sent the screws with a sheet of paper stating warranty rules and highlighted the part about disassembly voiding the warranty. Dont know if they are soft. Most of us on BFC recommend using Wiha brand torx screwdrivers they seem to "grab on" better than other stuff our there.

Change your screws to T8. Will have to cut them down to size though. I got mine from usaknifemaker. Also look into getting standoffs. The aluminum backspacer is crap.

WoW. I have never taken a Spyderco apart. I started buying them in 1988, and have no idea how many I have. I have never needed to take one apart. I'm sure that's why it voids the Warranty too.

Maybe you should have bought a boring looking Sebenza. Breakdown seems to be one of their popular gimmicks.

I take mine apart to transplant different blades into my Ti Militaries. I could care less about the warranty.

Some guys have reported that it's hit or miss, but I've had pretty good luck I guess.

Not just the Military.....i am in same boat with my otherwise perfect and new Delica 4.

Should have left it alone but it just seemed so stiff when new that i worried maybe the not unheard of missing or two on one side bronze washer had happened to me....NOT...

On reassembly the one screw with poorly formed and shallow recess in head commenced to stripping out and others really not impressive on resisting burring considering minimal torque to heads...also the cool polish job takes away sharp corners...

They must have fun at factory, too....all i can say is G. Sakai buys them elsewhere and obviously some are of sloppy spec...it seems a widely distributed enough problem the D4 repair kits are sold to save calls to Spyderco.

And in same boat of calling tomorrow and begging for a screw and maybe D-nut affected by same bad screw with also bad threads..

a brand new knife and i buggered it and am a mechanic for a living who did everything right and still the job went bad....it happens.....but i never should have touched the thing....closed back knives have been cleaned easily since invented, and by me for nearly as long, it seems, and just no reason to touch unless parts swapping...

I've taken my Military apart several times and never had a problem. It must be the torx driver you're using. I use the Husky 8-in-1.

"I am a mechanic for a living part" must have slid right past?....such as ability to recognize shallow and over-polished recesses and poor fit of my Wiha and Bondhus drivers?...Chinese Husky will fix everything?....sorry if i seem short, but stop blaming operator instead of product every time.

I have Ti standoffs on it. Hated the way the OEM backspaces looked. May give the T8s a shot. Any recommendations for replacing the clip screws?

That was the driver I was using. I've only taken it apart when I felt like it was unavoidably necessary (ie I know if I don't that whatever is in it is going to wreck it).

There are also button-head T8's for the clip screws available, but I got these from a hard drive (you'd be surprised at the selection of screws you get from one) that crapped out. They were already the right length.

Awesome. Thank ya, sir

Most of the time it is the persons fault but definitely not all. Probably the reason they won't warranty knives for damage done during a owner caused repair. It would likely be into the hundreds or thousands just from people not loosening up thread locker before trying to loosen. Then there are guys like me that shouldn't have a tiny screwdriver/torx etc. in my hands.

No mtngunner, I'm not talking about you. When a guy does something for a living I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. If you were as ham handed as me you would have changed occupations or starved decades ago. :)

My fault for assuming comment directed to me when a slower read shows exact opposite....
on the hardware on the Delica it is plain overpolished with rounded off recesses and also burred up right away from plain soft...probably shined right up due to that...
....just a bad lot of hardware....got a discontinued Delica rebuild kit in a trade with other stuff and much better screws....everything totally identical otherwise and all OEM....replaced all the screws and d-nuts while at it as they were also.polished bright and everything now looks completely new and unfiddled with......as it should have stayed right out of box.....
