Military Hatchet - WWI - What to do?

A few years ago I found this - not even sure where! Only markings are the "U.S." and remnants of green paint on handle and head. As I have more time on my hands now (retired) - it was time to get a plan for it. Original plan was to simply change the handle as it has been broken, remounted and beat up some more. Blade measures 3-1/4 across.

Took a closer look, and spent some quality time searching on line. This leads me to think

1. Probably a WWI head
2. Probably a WWII handle (thinking WWI handle was straight, not curved)

As I probably don't need it to use, but am diving deeper into WWI on some other research - to just rework the handle to make it sturdy. Also put a good practical edge on it for (as someone noted) "cutting ropes and opening ammo crates". Will go into the footlocker with the other odds and ends of WWI stuff I have.

Any insight or thoughts on all of this?

Mine is marked "US" and under that "MANN 1944" and it does have a curved handle. The canvas cover is marked "U.S." on the front and "Canvas Products of KC 1945" on the back.

I believe curved handles were used during WW1, too.
