My office manager is giving her son a Ka-Bar next generation as kind of a "stocking stuffer" gift for his graduation from Parris Island in July. Anyway, she wants to have it inscribed and asked me how to properly designate his unit. Much to my chagrin, can't remember the order. He is in 3rd Battalion, Mike Company, Platoon 3048. My initial guess would be 3/M/3048, but now I am second guessing. Anyone know for sure?

Not sure about Marines, but if it were Army it would start at the smaller unit first so it would be:

3048 Plt/M Co/3 Bn

Anyone else have thoughts?

What if he gets transferred?

Perhaps a name and class number or grad date... something that won't change over time.

There is a lot more pride to be shown if the inscription is of his permanate party and not of his basic training unit. Example: My basic training unit was A/7/1. My permanate party unit was Charlie Company 2Bn/504 Parachute Infantry Regiment. (82nd Airborne Division). She might just want to wait until he gets to his unit??? I know most guys are proud of their boot camp, but soon after, they realize that the permanate party is the unit to be proud of.

Muckdogs,
If the knife is to commemorate his graduation from boot camp,
I would suggest:
Rank/NAME
Platoon 3048
(Boot camp is all about your platoon and series. The "3" in 3048 designates it as 3rd Battalion platoon.)
MCRD Parris Island
(Marines will always argue about which MCRD is tougher, but everyone knows; there is Boot Camp and that resort out here in Hollywood land.)
Graduation Date

Otherwise, NAME ,
SSN USMC
will work regardless of his assigned unit in the future.

Thanks for the replies. I like Rippers idea. Rank-Name-Platoon-MCRD-Date because it is to commemorate his graduation from PI. Lord knows, we worked hard enough to get him there. For those that have been there, it really is a day that you will never forget. Hopefully, when I go to see him graduate, my first trip back to the Island in 16 years, I won't be a blubbering baby. Jeez, sometimes I have a hard enough time making it through the national anthem or that friggin Lee Greenwood song. What a puss. :D :D :D

BTW, there is only one Island. San Diego is a resort.
