military issue

I'm not sure about military issue, but....
Emerson claim that the military use their knives, primarily the Commander, also i've heard that the French Foreign Legion use the Spyderco Chinook. Great thread, i sometimes wonder what the military and special forces are carrying myself. :D

From what I've read, the military likes the Striders and the Busses. Both these companies have the toughest blades and the best guarantee in the business.

Emerson does have a contract with NASA and the USN. As far as official U.S. military issue knives check out Camillus, Ontario and Kabar. Keep in mind that elite troops like U.S. Army Special Forces, SEAL teams and even the French 2REP (2e Regiment Etranger de Parachutistes) can and do purchase whatever knives suit them best and in in many cases request "sterile" knives from manufacturers. SOG and Mission do make "issue" knives for the SEALS and I believe that the Benchmade AFO is an issue item with the Coast Guard. Also, Strider Knives, Busse and others brands are popular with the military these days, but for the most part Kabar and Ontario fixed blades are extremely popular with soldiers since they don't cost too much to replace if lost. When I was in Fort Benning (GA), Benchmade, Emerson and Spyderco folders were also very popular with the troops.

I know for a fact that the Army issues Camillus Pilots Survival Knife, BM AFO swithcblade, BM Stryker, BM Nimravus and I believe the BM Stryker Auto also. They all have NSNs listed.

I ahve it from Major Ed (10th SF) that many guys don't carry large fixed blades, and many who do carry Ka-Bars or similar inexpensive knives. He carries a Randall Mod 14 (my personal favorite), but he say the most valuable knife is usally a good multitool.

He did say that since a dive knife i required for safe diving the SEALs are issued SOG knives. SF are not limited inw hat they can carry, only personal preference. He admits taht the 14 is a bit heavy, but he paid for it and is damn well going to use it.

The knife used by Spec Ops depends on the mission usually, and their prsonal taste. Multitools are everywhere for sure, and fixed blades usually run between 4-7" -- weight and size, plus the ability to easily mount on their LBE's are some important considerations.

In addition to the many listed above, there are a LOT of TOPS blades, and even a few Simonich blades used.

Emerson, Strider, and TOPS are all former military and/or Spec Operators, so the troops go to them for two reasons: the makers have extensive contacts in the communities, and the troops know they were designed by folks who have ben there and done that in the field under battle conditions, and they trust these guys to give them something that will not fail.

Best,

Brian.

STILETTO RAGGIO

Judging from the number of typos in your post and what your current "occupation" is I figure you are either a$$ dragging tired or have to be somewhere real soon (I figured it's probably both).

Hang in there, I (and a lot of others)appreciate what you're going through for the sake of our country.

From a former enlisted jarhead,

KA-BAR KNIVES Inc. Olean, New York does not sell knives directly to the military.
They do sell a huge amount of knives however to PX's, base stores, Army-Navy surplus stores and to individual units.
The factory claims that when they do try to get military contracts the US goverment doesnt want to pay the price.
Go figure someone in the Pentagon will ok the purschase for a xx490=milspec-043:LK#@J-43 for Two Hundred and Fifty Doodzillion dollars for a friggin ink pen but then again they try and beat down the factories to meet a certain price point.
Also according to factory production #s the KA-BAR 1217 USMC Fighting/Ulility knife is the most massed produced-purschased sheath knife in the United States if not the world!
Of course its a little easier on the soul and pocketbook to loose a $34 dollar knife than a $400 super duper Spec Op hand made knife.

OTOH, I know the Army issues Gerber Multi-pliers to its boat mechanics (yes, the Army has boats) and occasionally a Camillus folder with marlin spike to some of its other maritime personnel. Don't know about the other units though.

As for the the AF we still rely on the good ole' M-9 bayonet made by phobis, and either a Leatherman or a Gerber (depending on where you are stationed). Pilots get BM reflex autos (sometimes). The whole "Military Issue" thing is rather blown out of proportion. In my 7 years in I have never seen any of the, so called issue knives issued to any troops. I carry a few different knives, ranging from my Dale Reif Atrox to my Strider WP2. I have seen a few MOD's MT's, and Emerson knives, but nothing that has been issued. The thing is, Units are issued IMPAC cards and are allowed to buy equipment for thier troops if it is needed for the mission. I think that is where the big "Issue" confusion comes from. Specialized eqipment for a few soldiers is far different than issue items. If a sf unit buys 10 MT amphibians for their guys for a mission. That doesn't make it a Military Issue item. Ya gotta kind of take most of the advertisements out there with a grain of salt. I wish we got some of these knives though. I would love not to pay for them. :D

LMAO!

Yeah -- the ones I mentioned are personal purchases, not issued. I know that some of the custom makers and the manufacturers I mentioned above have donated some blades, and have shipped blades to people who needed them, with a "take it now, and just pay me whenever ya can" thing. Pretty cool.

PS KaBar -- got your email, but did an accidental mass deletion. Sent notice to your website address...can you resend the message? Didn't get a chance to read it...

I have a friend who is a sniper in the Marines and remeber him telling me a while back his Cap. or man in charge was trying to get them a certain knife. Can't ask him now he is on ship in ocean outside Afghastain last I heard.I just figured there was a certain knife they issued like they do M-16,Beretta,etc. then certain groups bought specials for certain tasks if they could.
