Hallo. I'm enlisting in the U.S. Army. Not tonight, or anything, but I will be. I was just wondering about the regulations/laws pertaining to the field carry of non-issue knives in the U.S. Military, or if they vary from branch-to-branch, the Army. If you have a resource, a link would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's gonna vary widely according to your job, unit, base, and current deployment. Wait until you get to your unit to find out their rules, unless you already know where you'll be assigned, in which case you could call ahead.

For Basic, you won't be allowed to carry anything anymore.
After that (maybe even after school), you will be. It really is up to the Post regs, and your chain of command. For instance if the Post says 3.5" or less, but your chain of command says 3" or less, then you'd have to go to a 3"max blade.
I don't know anyone who carries a sheath knife stateside, most of them carry a small folder + Leatherman.

A lot of it also depends on how you're viewed by your chain of command. If you're generally squared away, you'll usually get a lot more leeway than if you get a reputation for causing problems.

When I lived in the barracks, we had a limit of 4", but I openly kept several Khukris, larger fixed blades, a hatchet, and a machete, and I never got hassled about it. (YMMV though, EOD is traditionally a lot more relaxed than most MOSs.)

Yeah. I'm aware that you can't bring anything to basic. I have a friend in the Nat. Guard, and he let me know a while back. I was thinking more for active deployment, but all this info is great, anyways. Thanks for it all, guys.

The best answer is always wait until you are to your actual unit and see what they will allow you to carry. It isn't going to be the same between C/1/75 and the "338th Mess Kit Repair Brigade."
