does any one know how to get info on an old
german bayonet? i know it was made in the 1800,s
it is 13.5 overall the blade is 8.5 inches also has a
curve blade. very well made and balanced.
any info on where to find more info would be great!

Don't know much about old bayonets but your sounds awfully short for a bayonet particularly as the earlier bayonets up to and including some WWII models were pretty long. Most 1800's bayonets I've seen have blades closer to 16"-20" if not longer.

Might yours have been broken and reprofiled?

Maybe this will help you out a little?

that could be the case. it was common if a bayonet got broken than it would sometimes be ground down to a fighting knife. a picture would be helpful too.

ok, this knife does not appear to be altered the blade curves up
it also looks like a german m1871. the bayonets i saw on line
simular to this one were all straight. i do have pictures if i can
just figure out how to post them! any way like i said, i do not
see how the blade could be curved like this if it was straight originally

thanks to all who responded

send a picture to me and I will try to ID it, as said the length is all wrong for any blade pre post WWII as the shortest blades were about 10-12" and then not till post 1870ish. Before this they were mainly sword blades. If it is German you can look at my site under germany www.old-smithy.info and see if you see anything there, but I am a bit short of German stuff pre 1870 as it is all rather expensive and rarer than the later stuff as a lot was converted into ersatzs etc. by a thrifty German army
