Military lanyard sleeve problem

I have a question:

The metal tube liner of my new Military's lanyard hole was very loose; so much so that you could hear it rattle when the knife was shaked.

Well, today the tube and the spacer fell out of the handle completely.

Now my question is this:
Does the metal tube and spacer for the lanyard hole add any strength or structural integrity to the knife?

If not, then I really don't mind missing the tube and spacer.
But if it makes the knife weaker, I might send it back to Spyderco.

What's the verdict?

Thanks,
Allen.

It will make the back of the scales weeker,I would think that if it was dropped and hit the right way the scales may break.
I had one do the same thing,I sent it in and they pressed the tube back in.

allenC, I have extremely modified both a Para and a Mili. This is what I found. On the Para, because it is open-backed by design, the lanyard tube and spacer add structural support, so much so, it needs to remain intact. On the Mili, being that it has a back-spacer, I was able to remove it and still have the handle remain ridgid. *note, this is on an extremely shortened Mili, about 6 in. opened length. A reg. sized Mili may need the tube and spacer if it is too far away from the back-spacer.

As I re-read,this comes to mind, "Damn all this, send it in and have them (Spyderco) press in a new one!" :)

Hope this helped in some way. Walter

Thanks guys.

WWELLS20,

How did you shorten the handle of your Military?
You said it's about 6" open, and the blade is 4", so the handle must be about 2" now, right?

But it seems that the nested liner is easily longer than 3", so I'm confused...

Allen.

Well, it's not really the blade and the handle so much as the LOCK.

Due to its design, how can the nested liner-lock be shortened and the lock still be effective?

I am utterly stumped,
Allen.

Why not contact Amanda on the phone over at Spyderco and find out what they recommend?
