Hello! I've had a Military for about a year or two now (one of the first runs) and I've never had a problem with it. The other day I was reading a review of it on Cliff Stamp's home page. He mentioned that with one grip the liner lock consistantly failed. I got out my Military and played around with it and sure enough Cliff was right. If you white knuckle it and twist counter-clockwise the lock disengages fairly easily. I have two questions, one for Sal and one for general response:

1. Sal, does this happen on the new Military or just on the old version?

2. Everybody else, does this matter? I mean I've had this knife for a while and I've never had the lock fail in use-because I can MAKE it fail, does that mean that the lock is no good? Thanks in advance.

I have never had the old style. I have tried and tried to make the liner on my new Militaries (plain and serrated) fail and cant. This isn't to say it cant happen, but it doesn't on mine. I would say if you havent had problems so far it would be OK. Just be aware of the potential when you are using it. I also wouldn't use it in a manner that may duplicate the grip.

Johan - Did the lock "fail" or did you "unlock" it?

I am able to find a position that will "unlock" ANY folding knife...if I try to.

Cliff was also able to "unlock" the new Military with his "white knuckle" method.

We have not had one fail (defeat) in use.
If ABSOLUTE non folding reliability is desired, I would recommend a small fixed blade. (Although I have seen fixed blade knives break at the hilt).

I guess it depends on what you are going to do with it. Personally, I don't think you will find many folders that are as reliable as the Military, at any price, custom or production.

Sal, thanks for your reply. As I said the Military has never faied in use, only if I make it unfail; which I guess is the same thing as unlocking it. Please don't think I was critizing the Military, it was my first expensive high-quality knife; it got me in to collecting. I just wanted to know if this was a common occurace and to get some opinions on it.

Johan - No problem here. Besides, criticism is good, as long as it's honest. that's how we learn.

We've extended much time, effort and funds to try to develop the linerlock into a safe reliable lock. When we compare our lock with others (custom as well as production), we find that ours compares favorably. We are currently working with our makers in Seki sharing our experience as they do with us.

I'm sure we'll come up with improvements (as will others) as well as newer and better locks.

Johan,

Life is the best tester. If you are use the Military (or any other knife) extensively for year or two and didn't experienced any problems it can mean one thing of two possible:
 knife is really reliable or
 you are lucky chap.
Of course this suggestion isn't right if you only OWN but not USE the knife...
If life shows knife reliability but test result suggests something different - think about this test validity. I think I could let to fail each knife, gun or another mechanical device if I would like. The test must simulate the real situation. On the other hand, to evaluate test validity it would be not the worst idea to think HOW REAL this simulated situation is.
If Military lock would be unreliable in real life SPYDERCO would have lots of reclamation and it would be a great trouble here, in BladeForums and in blade magazines. Did you hear something like?

Sal is right, only fixed blade is near 100% reliable against unlocking. But only NEAR because no one device is reliable at 100%, sorry...
