Where can i get MRE made for the Military?
NOT those sold by Brigade Quartermaster or U.S Calvary.
The Real Military Stuff

As I understand it Military MREs have been unavailable to the surplus market for the last few years. I believe the government did this in order to pass unused MREs out as disaster relief and emergency supplies for refugees etc.

From what I understand, they MIL-SPEC MRE's tended to disappear in massive quantity's. The military got tired of losing so many, so they stated stamping the packs "U.S. Governmet Property. Not for Commercial sale" Or something to that effect.

From what I understand the discontinuation of Military MREs was twofold, to stop the resale of military stores by GIs looking to make a few extra bucks, and that the Military MREs are made with components supplied to the MRE manufacturers by the goverment and it was improper to sell meals with these goods back to the public with items already paid for by their taxes. I have eaten both types of meals, mil-spec and military, and the only difference seems to be that the mil-spec meals menus are limited and that the accesory packet, salt, pepper, toliet paper, tabasco, matches, spoon, and chicklets, are better in the military meal compared to the mil-spec meal. There are only two companies that make MREs and they also produce the mil-spec versions.
The Warnick Company http://www.wornick.com/ and Sopackco http://www.sopakco.com/
Another company, Oregon Freeze Dried http://www.ofd.com/ the maker of Mountain House backpacking food also makes the artic rations and the Lrrp rations. Here is a good site to check out for current ration information and menus http://www.dscp.dla.mil/subs/rations/rations.htm . An alternative to military rations is the Coyote Camp Meals supplied by the Supply Cache used by wildland firefighters. http://www.firecache.com/ Click on online catalog then coyote camp meals. I've used all of the above meals, military and civillian, and they are pretty decent eating. They all are heavy and wouldn't want to pack them far but they're great for throwing into a truck or stocking a cabin. For woods walking I pretty much stick to instant oatmeal, instant soups, hot chocolate, and light weight items that use hot or cold water. Hope this helps.

Hmmm.... interesting theories...

The most recent places I've seen MREs for sale were pawnshops in Fairbanks, Surplus stores, and the AAFES Sports store at Ft. Wainwright. Some of these were stamped 'Gov. Property, Not for Resale'. You could sell cases for 35 to 45 bucks, and buy them for 50 to 60. My experience has been that the newest MREs aren't available, in general, to the public. The older ones, via whatever means, are.

I don't know that the military has ever outright sold MREs that were of use to them. I do know they've donated extra ones to relief organizations and disaster areas in the past. My guess is that DRMO may occasionally get some that have exceeded their freezing limits, or age limits, or whatever other limits the government has put on them.

I purchase new, current manufactured, USGI MRE's by the case from a local army surplus store. They are available, just a matter of getting them. They are restricted much like certain types of ammo. Not illegal to buy or own, just hard to get in some areas. Regards, Clayton

Yuk! I still have nightmares about corned beef hash

. The current MRE's are far better than the ones I ate in the military. We had two menu choices, tuna&noodles and corned beef hash. I think the cooks sold the other menu items!

Greg, we had to eat worms. We cooked 'em up with some powdered eggs. If you didn't like it, we'd take out the eggs
