Which steel should I buy and why? Will be a carry knife with limited work and I like a sharp knife, and one fairly easy to sharpen. Comments appreciated.

I think that the 440V Military has more "upgrades" in it than just the steel. Although, upgrades are a matter of opinion, I suppose. However, I personally find the 440V of my BF Native easier to sharpen than the ATS-55 of my Standard, if that means anything.

I have both ATS34 and 440V knives and find the 440V easier to sharpen and it keeps an edge better when sharpened, rockspyder's experience to the contrary.

Jim/Big Tex,

No contest: 440V in PLAIN edge would be my choice over ATS-34. Holds an edge longer, and sharpens up easier. Be sure to get a Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 - my favorite all around sharpener hands down.

Thanx guys, looks like the 440v will get the nod. Ray, I got the 204 about a week ago and doubt that I will get much for all my old sharpening equipment. The 204 is good. Course, I could sharpen my knives on my stones, but the 204 is much easier and quicker. Have a good one.

CPM440V is the better of the two steels in my experience. Not that ATS34 is bad. It's not. It is, in fact, quite good. It's just that 440V is better. It holds an edge longer and it does so at a lower Rc hardness, which gives it an edge in the toughness dept. too.
A great steel IMO. One of the best so far. BUT, who knows what tommorrow may bring?

Again, I appreciate the comments and I ordered the 440v. I will tell everyone how I like this knife asap.
