I am thinking of buying a Military model and find that it is offered in both 440V and ATS-34.I can get an especially good buy on the 440V.What is the difference,in layman's terms?I think I want the serrated blade.Any input?Any recommendations? Thanks!

CPM 440V is the most popular choice for the Military. I don't believe Spyderco makes the ATS-34 blade Military anymore. Both steels are excellent. CPM 440V has a much higher carbon content and will hold an edge much longer, the downsideisthat it can be a bit harder to sharpen. The serrated Military is a good choice because it has about one inch of plain blade.

Maybe Sal can answer this one... the Dealer I buy from has the New style Military ( Stainless hex screws instead of black ones used in the old Military ) in both ATS-34 and 440V. Best price is on the ATS-34....Best edge holding is on the 440V...best corrosion resistance is on the ATS-34..... Best,... ahhh heck! They're both GREAT knives! Get one of each!

Plain edge 440V.
Gotta Love that 440V!
I wish my butterknives were made from it!

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid.

I usually carry plain-edge knives because I feel they're more versatile, but for the Military I had to go serrated. Why? Because a fully-serrated 440V Military has probably the most raw cutting power (between sharpenings) of any production folder. How could I resist that? Also, it seemed kinda odd to get the Spyderco "flagship" in a plain edge. Still, when I saw the walk-in Military prices at the S.F.O., I was sorely tempted to pick up a second in plain-edge.

Basically, for most versatility, go plain. If you have other folders and want the closest thing to a chainsaw in a 5" package, go serrated.

I like the 440V in either plain or serrated. I use my serrated the most and find that it slices as clean as most plain edges.
