Military or Police G-10?

I have a birthday coming up--and a very generous brother. I carry a knife for self-defense, primarily, although the closest I've ever come (and hope to come) is cutting through those annoying plastic thingies that hold pairs of sneakers together.

Anyway... I absolutely LOVE the Police G-10, with serrated edge and I like the size of that knife. However, I have noted that it has a back-lock, and I believe (though I am not sure and you can certainly correct me) that a liner lock is stronger.

The military, on the other hand, is just big (not longer, fatter)... which one would you guys go with?

(I want the strongest lock, but I like the longer Police blade)

Thank you.

Mighty Jessit,

First, I want to iterate that while the blade on the police looks longer, if you actually compare cutting edges you will find them comparable.

Second, The Military will out cut and in my opinion, outperform the Police model. It has a better Steel(compare 440V to ATS-55) a better edge profile and is just a better overall design(IMHO).

While it was not designed as a fighter, nor was the Police for that matter, I think it would do to ride the river with.

Conclusion,
The lock on the Military is better, the blade steel is better, the overall design is, well, in a word...."BETTER"

Just my $0.02

I totally agree with Mr. Jonson. I've carried and used both, and the Military definitely outperforms the Police Model. Scary sharp and stays that way.

Hi all,
I've been away for too long.
MJ I own both and I agree with William,
go with the military w/ 440V steel. You can't go wrong.

While I have both, and a REKAT Carnivore as well (Thank you, again), I would unhesitatingly recommend the Military. The Police is over 4", which makes it illegal in many areas, and the blade is hollow-ground. I prefer the wedge grind on the Military. I would also suggest a plain edge unless you do a lot of cutting of rope and other, similar, items where a toothy edge is, perhaps, better. The plain edge is rather better for almost everything that I cut, and is infinitely easier to sharpen. It also does not look so nasty to LEOs.

While the blade of the Police is over 4" the edge length is under 4" which makes it legal in places which clearly specify "edge length," speaking of which, does New York (and New York City) specify if the 4" means blade or edge? I'm in CT which says "edge," but I'm going back to New York soon.

I also agree with the esteemed Mr. Johnson. The Military is lighter, stronger and has better steel. Great minds tend to think alike, eh Mr. Johnson?

Can't go wrong with either, remember they are both excellent knives because they are SPYDERCO! But if you have to pick, like mentioned above, the MILITARY man

PK, I don't know about your areas, but in the DC area, they measure from the end of the hilt to the tip. By that measurement, the Military comes in at just 4", 3 5/8" from the choil to the tip. Both the Military and the Police are illegal in DC, but I believe thme to be OK in Maryland, and I know that they should be OK in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
