Military or the Police 3 ?

Hi gang, been lurking for awhile reading and learning. This is my first thread, so I hope you can help me decide. I really want a new Spyderco. I don't have a military or a police, but I am not afraid to EDC a large folder. My current EDC blades are ZT 0300, and a Strider lego SMF. I don't have access to a brick and mortar to even feel these (Spyderco) knives in hand, so I am relying on your experience to help me decide. Truth be told, I am fairly sure I will end up with both eventually, but that will take me a long time. So, looking at the military the only thing I thought I would change is the butt of the handle. With the butt smoothed out the military looked more like a Police to me. Is there some fit or function in the milli handle that I can't see from pictures? Like I said I don't have a way to get one in hand, so I can't tell. I am a big fan of S30V in the milli, VG-10 in the police seems a step down to me, but if Spyderco's heat treat is dead on maybe not? You guys are the spyderco nut's, educate me, show me the light! I love both the designs, so why is the milli seemingly ubiquitous and the police seldom mentioned? Looking forward to any advice on which one to buy, and why.

They're such great knives...that it all comes down to what design you like the most. Do you prefer lock-backs over liner locks? Do you want a wider knife (the Military) over a slimmer knife?

I like both. But for self defence I give the Police the nod because of the longer blade and sturdier handle *(liners) construction. Also if you have large hands the Milli fits that bill. It is also the better slicer and food prep knife.

Go with the more popular model and that is the Milli. Just to see what everyone raves about. Then get the police. You might like the police more. Who knows! But really, it is an individual thing and what you are using the knife for.

Good points, I really like the looks of the police better I think. Is spyderco vg-10 good? I have no idea about vg-10 so I'm a little hesitant. Also I read the police blade is thinner, if I could buy a police with better steel and 4 mm blade stock, wow. I think I would get 3 of 'em!

What can anyone tell me about spyderco linerlock vs their lock back? I'm not really rough on my knives, but if I need it, I want to have confidence in it. I have broken locks before. Never on a spyderco, or other well made knife, but it makes you think about it with each knife you handle after you see a failure.

if ou are used to ZT30x series and regular striders i thin the police may feel weird in your hand, the handle is very long but very slim too... the milie will fill your hand better and still carries great.

as far as steel it's really a matter of opinion and what your used to. and, imho, if you're used to touchup your knives often VG10 will have an advantage as it's easier to touch up. s30v will keep a working edge longer but won't come back to shaving as easily.

Spyderco linerlock vs. backlock. That's a tough one. Both are well designed and well built. The backlock is ambidextrous where the linerlock is handed. Both are rated at a breaking strength that is beyond what I could apply without a cheater bar.

Personally, I carry the Military, but the Police is a bit longer that the law allows here. I like both, though.

Wow, nice picture! I guess the milli is the winner so far. People sure love it. I bet I will too.

Military is a great knife. What do you have against the butt of it? It's only shaped that way, so that the handle won't slide out of your hand.

Nothing against it, but not having held one ever, just looking at pictures the butt seems larger than it needs to be. Again, this is why I asked for others options. The handle may be perfect, but without holding one, it kinda looks odd to me.

That's what she said. ;)

I bought a Police simply because it was $60 as opposed to a $100+ Military. That's just me though.

+1
hahahahah!!

If you ever decide in the future to get a Police, make sure you get the G-10 one, since you have the option for four different pocket clip-carry spots.
The SS version has tip-down carry only :( If you don't mind, then more power to ya!

Well, I ended up with the G10 police. I was so excited, once it arrived I wasn't very happy. Out of the box, full of grit, fit and finish were awful! Uneven scales, so dull I could run the cutting edge up and down my hands, pivot was very loose, polish of blade was very uneven, blade not centered, I could go on. I was going to send it back, but I didn't want to. So I decided to take the challenge on myself. After 3 days of work and tuning on it, the knife is perfect. Now I am loving it! The parts were all there, but very poor finish from Japan. I'm not going to bash spyderco, I am a fan. But this was probably the last time I get one that's not from Colorado.
