I am thinkin about getting a new Spyderco but don't really know which one I like best. The knife will serve mostly as back-up defense and will rarely be used.My SAK handles utility duties fine.Of the 3 knives mentioned (Police,
Starmate,Military) which one do you think would best serve me as
a defensive folder? All comments are appreciated!

Thanks,

Bobby

Bobby, my vote would be in the following order; Starmate, Military, then Police. Good luck and let us know what you get.

I have to agree with copfish. Of the three I would have to say Starmate for defense followed by military and then police. I love Spyderco, but I would also have to recommed the Carnivour from REKAT. They can be had for about the same price as the three knives you have mentioned and they feel great! Not to mention rolling lock.

i haven't been able to get my hands on a Starmate yet, but I personally like the Police over the Military. They are boh great knives, but the when you carry he military, you know you have a big knife in your pocket and with the police, the overall package is slimmer and to me, feels better. I sold my military here on the forums, but was planning on keeping my police untli a good friend wanted to buy it. I now have a new g10 police on the way from Confederate Cutlery and can't wait.

Civilian.

But between the three, go with a Starmate if you can open it quickly (I had to modify mine for more clearance on the hole). Otherwise the Military. On the Police model it's just too easy to slip up that narrow "neck" onto the blade when you hit hard material, though the G-10 version improves this a lot.

Well,I couldn't decide so I got 2 of the 3 knives.

I will soon be the proud owner of a Starmate and A G-10
Police model(both plain edge).Think I need a Military?

I carry a Steel Endura for my work knife.I would carry the Zytel model as it has a better grip but it is tip-up(I only
carry tip-down).I used to think discs, studs, and holes were fairly
equivalent for opening.After carrying
my Endura for awhile I find that not the case.I feel the hole is much quicker to "find" in a fast-draw situation. Thanks for the suggestions!

This one is EASY! Whichever one gets a rolling lock first

Otherwise:

Police: rock solid lockback. FOR ME, handle is a little too big for totally comfortable everyday carry. But I might lean towards this as my first choice. Blade is >4", is that kosher in your town?

Starmate: Very nice liner lock. Smallest footprint of the group means the most comfortable carry. If you're really sensitive to carry comfort, this is the top choice.

Military: The Military has some great features, but one feature -- the monsterous handle -- makes it uncomfortable enough for everyday carry (FOR ME) that I wouldn't really consider this one. If you're not sensitive to big handles, this one is worth a serious look.

I have not held the Starmate so I have no opinion there except for the potentially lower cutting efficiency because of the hollow ground blade.

The Military is one of my daily companions, and it gives me great pleasure to carry it. Very nice handle and well made.

I have owned three Police models, all gave me good use.

What fits your hand better?

Which lock do you fell safest with?

I wrote a review of the Kasper AFCK variant, an interview of Bob Kasper, and some thoughts and brainstorms of the AFCK in general. It can be found at http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000568.html . Check it out and tell me what you think.

Although I love the Military, I too found the handle to be slightly big for daily carry. That is where the neck sheath by Mike Sastre came in real handy. It really makes the Military much easier to take along on outdoor adventures.

I feel that the Military's handle is slim (compared to an AFCK) and sits just fine in the pocket. The 440V plain edge is a d@mn good knife, and will serve you well. The Police is also a nice knife but I have not carried mine. I have yet to carry or touch or hold the elusive Starmate. I hope I help...
