Hi everyone, I am interested in the military and would like to ask you about the backspacer. I have read somewhere on the web that earlier models have two barrel spacers inside the delrin. Later models have only delrin without barrels. Newest models have aluminum backspacer without barrels. He said that he removed delrin and only used the barrel spacers. He also posted his pic and it looked nicer. I want all black military with barrelspacer and delrin. Is there any way that I can tell which military have the barrel spacer? Thanks

You can always replace the backspacer with standoffs. As far as what model came with what kind of spacer, I have no idea. My Ti Military has an FRN backspacer, I believe.

wouldn't putting aftermarket standoffs in the military screw up the fit of everyting?

Depending on how they are done. I prefer the backspacer, it provides a bit more comfort and prevents the G10 from digging in when cutting. For me, the construction is open enough that if I need to clean it, I can without trouble.

It may not be easy. The black blades first appeared in 2005 but Spyderco does not keep records of minor improvements, like changes to the Military's backspacer.

The reason I'm asking for the barrelspacer is that I don't like screws tightened into softer material. I had bad experience with a folder from other company which had screws that went directly into the G10scale on the other side and it stripped the G10. The screw turned forever.

I believe the aluminum back spacer first appeared on the digital camo Military, which was released at the end of the summer in '08. And sometime after that the transition was made for the other standard production Millies.

I believe it's a safe bet that any Millie made before July '08 will have a barrel spacers. Just look for a Millie with a box code before that date (something before GH) and you should be good.

I use the barrels/standoffs from the backspacer of the CF S90V on my Ti millie they work great.

adding this

The two backspacers that have been used the older (FRN?) with the two holes and the new (aluminum?) ones. A fair bit of difference in size

The standoffs are in use in this picture.

where can I get standoffs?

http://www.jantzsupply.com/

Another forumite (Joshua J) pointed me here when my millie found itself under the wheels of a heavy piece of machinery. I cannot, however attest to the customer service of this particular supplier as I didn't order from them. Maybe someone else could recommend them from experience. The knife was fine, except for the spacer. The weight of the the machine flexed the g-10 and ripped the screws out of the threaded aluminum. This is what Joshua J had to say:

"On page 35 of the catalog they have the .157" standoffs needed for the .15625" (5/32") thick blade of the Military. I have no idea what kind of screws you would need, so if going this route it would be best to call and make sure you get something compatible."

Hope that helps.
