I have the bug for a Military and have been looking at all the different models available. Which brings me to my question, what steels have been offered in the Military Model starting with the first ones produced? Thanks

most of the ones i have seen are in 440v those are older ones and the newer ones are mostly in s30v but i have seen some in s90v both good steels

I wish they would produce more BG-42 blades................especially a paramilitary.

440V (S60V) - 2 screw clip
ATS-34
440V (S60V) - 3 screw clip
S30V
BG-42
CPM D2
S90V
CPM M4

The 2 screw clip 440V had a harder heat treatment and was prone to chipping. The 3 screw clip models used a different heat treat to resolve the problem.

ATS-34 plus these ;), and a bunch of S30Vs inbetween

Thanks for the info!!! Now the tough question, which one first? I just picked up a Gayle Bradley with the M4. Damn this Spyderco bug!!!

The S30V vers is the easiest to get, the others will be hard to get and read not cheap.

Just have to watch for sprint runs and or steel changes.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the information. I went with the BG42 and believe I will pick up one in M4 next.

I have all the steels but to me there will always be something special about the BG42 version. It's well balanced in all the features and attributes of the military, and what makes it special.

The M4, S90V, and CPM D2 in particular are excellent but to me the the cream of the crop will always be the BG42 version. From steel to heat treat, to texture of the carbon fibre everything is just right.

For others it might be the S90V, or CPM M4, but I'll always look at the BG42 model with fondness. It's probably the last one I'd get rid of. I had two, but I had to sell the extra to pay for one of my surgeries. I wouldn't take a brand new CRK in trade.
