Military with Black Blade - Sanitary?

Does the Military with the blade blade have a slightly rougher or more porous surface than the standard blade?

I'm going to order one or the other, but don't want a blade that may harbor more bacteria when used on food, due to the surface texture.

Thanks.

I'd be more concerned with the coating rubbing off into food than with it harboring bacteria. Just go with the standard one so you won't have to think twice.

i agree just get a plain finnish. i dont care for blade coatings as the wear off and kinda look ruff after they do wear.

I'd worry more about the bacteria in the food than the possible contamination from a knife that I cleaned.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the black version of the Military was a reactive finish and not a coating?

I'm usually not a black blade fan at all. I thought with tip down carry, it would lessen the "shiny steel" visible above my pocket.

Edit: Just checked with my Para Military 2 and neither the end of the blade, nor the blade hole even show enough to be a concern. Question answered - I'm going with the regular blade.

Thanks. Carry on.

You can't see any of the blade sticking out of the pocket looking at it straight on.

You can see a little blade in the top right only because I cut away the G10 to enlarge the choil. In other words, stock Millies aren't like that, and the G10 covers all of that area. Notice all of the blade sticking up above the handle is hidden in the pocket.

kreole,

Thanks. Just added a note to my post before yours'. You're right - I'm going with the regular blade.

Kreole, any chance of a picture of your millie open? I'd like to see how the enlarged choil looks. Thanks!

Sure, but it's incomplete. I'll link it because they're big pictures. I put it next to an unmodified Military to try to get a good comparison, though it might be best to gauge how much was taken off by the change in the bevel on the corner of the handle http://imgur.com/a/POmzS

Unrelated to the mod, I cut the tip of my thumb, so I haven't finished it yet (that M390 gets scary sharp ;) ). Once I'm closer to healed, I'm going to take it down just slightly more, then add the side bevel just for the sake of aesthetics. Right now just the tip of the jimping is just barely sticking up above the handle, but it feels a lot better, IMO of course; you can see I took a good chunk of the bump off to get to the jimping nearest the lock bar, and that makes it feel much larger.

I did it because, well, if you have a Military, you know about half the lower jimping is unusable. It's tucked away in the handle. It seemed like an obvious mod to cut down the handle enough to make the jimping useful, but that made me nervous because if it's so obvious, why have I never seen it done, or why hasn't Spyderco done it? That part doesn't touch the blade when it's open, so it doesn't help with side to side play. I suspect either it is a remnant left over from when there was no lower jimping--hence no reason to make the handle low enough for some to be usable--or as in this post, just the aesthetic benefit of covering up all of the blade when it's closed.
