I just received a spyderco Military with CPM 440V stamped on the blade. This must be an earlier model and I thought I was getting the newer model. Anyone know the year and what the differences are with the newer model?

I was kinda disspointed that it did not have stainless liners in it. It is just G1. Does the new version have SS liners or is the same as the 440V version?

Checked a few catalogs and it looks like 2002 was the last year for 440V. Steel changed to S30V in 2003. Liner on the lock side has been the same, or very close to it since the Military was first introduced. Second partial liner was added a year or two back on the off side. Spyderco is constantly refining their knives so I'm sure other changes have occurred over the last six years.

The Deacon knows his stuff.;) None of the Military versions have full liners if that is what you are looking for. The model was intended to be as lightweight as possible for its size, and liners add weight quickly. 440V is my second favorite steel in the Military, behind S90V.

The older 440V models are getting hard to find. I think you probably got a good deal. (Buy the way, were did you get it? :)

I got it off a gun website.

BTW, I bought two spydies from the same person. The other is a hawkbill BLK FRN SE. I thought it was a salt but it says VG-10 on the blade? When did spyderco produce these?

Thanks for all the replies. I am really liking this Military now.

you have a merlin....pretty much the tasman but witout the h1 steel....as far as the millie....it takes some pratice to get that steel sharp but once it is it stays like that for a long time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with CPM44oV. I have one of the original first release Militarys with the 440V blade, bought back in 1993 or 4. The only thing I do not like about it is that the blade tends to chip if used roughly. A few weeks ago I was out doing lawn work and had it handy. Used it to trim some small branhs, that kind of stuff. The edge got dull and had some small chips. It is currently on a Lansky sharpener re-working the edge to remove the chipped out sreas.

Do any of the other CPM steels do this? I have a few S30V blades, but have not roughed them up as of yet.

When Spyderco introduced 440V, it was a new steel. There was no real-world experience to draw from for the heat-treatment, so they went with the steel maker's suggestion. It proved to be a bit brittle, and they backed off the hardness a point or two. If yours was one of the two-screw clip models, it may ahave been made before the heat-treat was changed. I haven't had any unexpected chipping on mine. Expected chipping is a whole different can of worms, as my knives do not get treated gently. I've had BG-42 chip worse than 440V, and it isn't supposed to do that.

Yes mine is one of the old two-screw models.
Ah well, pretty soon I am gonna spring for one of the carbon fibre models.
Just undecided on which blade steel to get. D2 of S90V?

If you want one with a carbon fiber handle, you should go with the S90V anyway, as the CPM D2 comes with foliage green G-10.

Thank you very much.
I was thinking S90V would be better anyways.
I only have one knife with a D2 blade, the Camillus CudaMaxx 5.5.
It is alright, does dull easier than I like.
I am not really a fan of the foliage green color,
like natural carbon fiber better.
