I have had my Military for about a week and I have trouble putting it down! As someone said, the more I use it/play with it, the more impressed I become.

So THAT'S what's been attached to my right hand since the UPS man came last Friday!

Kelley,

Did you break down and get a Military? Was it on your list? You know, I think that you REALLY need to get the neck sheath like Dexter's. I don't think you should limit yourself to pocket carry with this fine knife

How's that finger (ya know, the one you almost cut off with the Wegner)? Oops, should I have kept that a secret

Seriously though, welcome to the club guys.

Chris

Wow! I just don't want to put this thing down. I know what all the hype is about now. It's all true!

Thanks to Chris at Top of Texas Knives. Call him, he may still be able to get you the ATS-34 Military for under $90.

Chris - No, the Military was not on my list. Yes, I broke down and got a fully serrated version anyway. Also got that black-coated Trident that I was looking for.

Still figuring out my carry preferences. This week... Trident in horizontal sheath on belt. Small Sebenza clipped to right front pocket. Wegner Jr. in back left jeans pocket. Micra or SAK in left front pocket. Oh geez - where do I put the SwissTool?!?! Need to work on that. In briefcase - Military (my coworkers are definately not ready for this knife), William Henry Lancet, and Spydie Native. I am a sick puppy. Where can I find the kind of help I need??? What on earth do I need 7 knives and a multi-tool for at the office? Ridiculous.

Finger update: No stitches. Almost completely healed. Got *real* good at opening my blades left-handed.

Oh yeah, that's Kelly - only one "e".

Kelly,

Sorry about the spelling. I though I saw it spelled that way somewhere. I guess it pays to check the profiles first! You are a sick puppy! I know you're going to kill me, but I returned the Civilian. I couldn't handle the fact that it was an older model without the full liner. Next time. I guess I'm behind by two knives now

I've been eyeballing the Black Trident as well. It never ends.

Kudos on the Military. Bring it to work and flick it as much as possible. People tend to leave you alone. I'll have to pick up a Native to carry (don't wan't to ding the BF Native).

Good to hear about the finger. It was a definite gusher. Spyderco's make some clean cuts!

Chris

Ya see, Chris??? I told you that you should've gotten the Native too. Such a bargain they were offering. Maybe I could've bled on it a little bit and they would've given an even better deal!

So, ya gonna get a new version Civilian? Or was that just an excuse to take it back cuz you didn't have a rational reason to tell your girlfriend why you got that "one purpose" knife.

Its not my girlfriend that I'm worried about

My wife would kill me if I had brought home the Civilian. LOL. I did tell her that I bought it and then returned it. I even showed her a picture. She didn't even blink when I then produced the new Endura that I DID buy at the show. HE-HE. I will get a Civilian, although another problem I noticed after I bought mine, the tip was bent from hitting the spacer. Looks like a very fragile tip. I think the new Merlin? looks cool, maybe thats the way to go.

You mention one of my only gripes with the Civilian: if the blade goes past the closed position the tip will run itself into the spacer, unlike most knives which would just hit on the belly.

Shortly after I got my Civilian, it left my hand on an opening drill while still closed. It fell spine-first onto a hard floor and this sent the point powerfully into the spacer. I was horrified!

The good news is that these are in wonderfully springy G-2 instead of brittle ATS-34, so while the point was seriously twisted by the experience, it could be straightened out and I only lost the tiniest piece of the tip. A trip back to Spyderco and they ground the back down very slightly to restore the point; you'd never notice if I didn't tell you. If the knife had been in ATS-34 I'm convinced it would be a chisel-point now.

Still, I think that the spacer could be extended below the belly so that this would strike instead of the tip. Then the only damage would be a little dulled spot. In all other stress that I have put it through, the Civilian's tip holds up flawlessly; it really is much stronger than it would appear.

Senator - I'm having trouble stopping from laughing at your "sick puppy" post! What a predicament!

I guess after all the hullabaloo about the Military, I'll actually have to break down and get one.

Thanks to all of you bladelovers for all I've been learning by lurking on this forum. This is my first post, but I've found my niche! There are others who share my fondness (obsession?) for knives. (I have to tell my wife; she thinks I'm alone in my knife-craziness.)

One question: There are now different blade steels for this, right (new and old versions)? Is the difference in the two enough to justify the higher price on the new (compared to the discounted older ones)? All replies appreciated.

R.J.: I'd spend more for the newest model of the Military. The CPM-440V steel is, by all accounts, significantly better than ATS-34, and there are additional design improvements that have been made to the newer model as well.

Welcome to the Forums.

RJ -- welcome! Nice to have another forumite from the Philippines.

Yes, the price difference between CPM-440V and ATS-34 is worth it.

CPM440V new model is the way to go. I'm sure Senator will test his new Military on his finger soon enough and give us his impressions of the steel

BTW, Senator. We're even. I broke down and ordered a Moran. That and the Endura should even us out, although you did spend a lot more than me

I'll make up for that at the Blade show (if my wife will let me).

Oh geez, Chris. Now look what you did. I found out that we were even, and couldn't stand for that. I just got off the phone... pre-ordered a Starmate.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I guess my path is cut out for me. The 'Miliary' is mine!

Alas! Some sacrifices will have to be made. But as long as I get a ...Military! Yeah!
