You mention one of my only gripes with the Civilian: if the blade goes past the closed position the tip will run itself into the spacer, unlike most knives which would just hit on the belly.
Shortly after I got my Civilian, it left my hand on an opening drill while still closed. It fell spine-first onto a hard floor and this sent the point powerfully into the spacer. I was horrified!
The good news is that these are in wonderfully springy G-2 instead of brittle ATS-34, so while the point was seriously twisted by the experience, it could be straightened out and I only lost the tiniest piece of the tip. A trip back to Spyderco and they ground the back down very slightly to restore the point; you'd never notice if I didn't tell you. If the knife had been in ATS-34 I'm convinced it would be a chisel-point now.
Still, I think that the spacer could be extended below the belly so that this would strike instead of the tip. Then the only damage would be a little dulled spot. In all other stress that I have put it through, the Civilian's tip holds up flawlessly; it really is much stronger than it would appear.
