I am thinking of buying the Military as a defensive blade.
What do you guys think of the blade? The liners, are they thick enough?

I have 4. two old styles and 2 new styles. I like the older style with the notched choil best for when I really use the knife out in the field. The lock up is solid on the Military and it is without a doubt a great knife. I have a 97' that is my EDC and the lock up on it is just as solid now as it was the day I bought it. I love the belly the blade gives you and the tip makes it nice for tight spots.

Buy one and you will love it.

It'll certainly do, it's more than big enough, gets scary sharp, and the lock is plenty tough. Think about how you'd feel, as a strong-arm robber, facing a "victim" who's suddenly holding a Miliary. -You've heard the old cliche about the best defensive blade being the one you have on you...

But, it's not specifically designed with this in mind, and with several MBC folders now available that are, if I wanted a folding knife with defense as it's primary mission, I'd look MBC.

I remember handling a new Mili, with the sci-fi lettering on the blade. The liner felt thin to me, compared to let's say a Wegner, don't talk about a Gunting.

Maybe "nesting" it makes it much stronger than it feels.

I think the liner was titanium too(lighter but not strong as steel). While it may be perfectly adequate, personally I did not like it.

To me, the Mili is a working knife...if defence were so impt to me, I would go for something else in the Spydie range. You have your Wegner, Lum G-10 Tanto, Gunting, Chinook, G-10 Police.....

I've never known human flesh to be tougher than any steel used in any
knife blade. It's the "operator" that makes the difference.

As to the Military, Jeff Randall did an article on this knife in the jungle
some time back and was using the knife blade to as a can opener!! Then
turned around and cleaned fish with it, not sharpening the blade for the
entire time in the jungle. One tough cookie of a knife.

So I'd say that the Military could no doubt serve as a weapon if need be.

Shortly after I bought my Military, the Terzuola/Spyderco StarMate came out and I bought one. It has the same steel in it as my Military, CPM440V, my favorite, and I honestly pefer the StarMate over the Military. It looks better and seems to fit my hand better. I also find the blade shape better for my purposes than the blade on the Military, and I suspect that it might well be a better choice for defense purposes as well.
