I am thinking of getting a mini mill to toy around with. Right now I have no real need, just interested in learning more about them. I am interested in making knives, so folders might be something to consider way way down the road.

Looking around I found two that would seem to fit my budget. They are the Grizzly mini mill and a Sherline mini mill. They are both around $500, which is about as cheap as I could find. Of these two, or others in this price range, which would be best as an entrance level machine? Thanks in advance.

The heaviest you can find space for. Doing so will help save you from buying one again.

I say the Grizzly, only because Grizzly CS is outstanding, and its not a bad machine. Take a closer look at the Sherline. I think you'll find its much smaller than the Grizz. On a side note, I bought the Harbor Freight mini-mill just for engine-turning. It was too much of a chore with my big mill. The small one is dedicated pretty much to that alone.
