hello all

i have been doing lots of thinking about purchasing a new blade and i want to know

would it be possible to interchange the military blade (4.00in) into the paramilitary handle?

based on measuermemts para military is :

200mm overall - 81mm blade length = 119mm handle length

military is :

102mm blade length
(with 139mm handle length )

will a 119mm overall handle length from the paramillie match correctly with a 102 mm blade length from the millie?

any help would be much appreciated, i know they run on different lock systems as well and im trying to take this into consideration, i think the blade is ground the same at the hinge end

thanks for all your help!

I don't have a Paramilitary, nor have I ever seen a disassembled picture but I would be shocked if it was possible. The compression lock and the liner lock require two very different alterations to the blade, I'm pretty certain the two blades are very different at the tang end and wouldn't be able to interchange without heavy modification, if at all.

any other opinions?

If you look at the para and the Military closely you'll notice that the pivot is pushed pretty far back from the end of the handle. This leaves more of the tang inside, and in my mind makes a much stronger knife.

You're also measuring blade edge length instead of the total blade. There is no way you're going to fit the Military's blade into the Paras handle, even before accounting for the locks.

The Compression lock on the Para takes a some very precise adjustments. Not something you could conjure up in your basement. Someone like STR might be able to, but it wouldn't be worth the price. Then you'd have to drill a new pivot hole, move the clip, probably drill / replace the liners to match, then drill a new hole in the blade for the pivot. You'd be better off (price wise) just getting someone to make a custom knife.

That's just not going to fly, even if it would the amount of work that would have to go into that would be on the far side of silly.

As JoshK said your best bet is to get a custom blade made for it if you realy must have it done.

any other opinions?
If your primary objective is a Military size blade in a smaller package, then buy a Miilitary and trim down the handle. It's a much more feasible mod and, in fact, has been done by a number of others. You will not be able to achieve 119mm, simply because, while only 102mm of the Military's blade is exposed, the entire blade is about 127mm long. But you should be able to knock 10mm or so off it.

Absolutely certainly not. The Military blade will stick out of the Para handle, even if you do somehow manage to make the different locks work with the different tang cutouts (some heavy modification there.)

If you go Deacon's route, make sure to wear respiratory protection, as the dust from sanding G10 is very bad for your lungs.

I have always thought that a Military size blade in a Para-Millie size handle with a compression lock would be a blade almost too awesome to contemplate.

I agree with Buffalohump. Millie blade in a para handle would be awesome. Handle to blade length ratio is my biggest peave with Spyderco knives in general. If Spyderco would maximize the handle to blade length ratio of the para, they would have the finest folder of all time.

I just lined my Military pivot up with my Para pivot....

The Military blade would stick WAY out of the Para scales.

Man, if the P-mil had max handle to blade ratio....argh, hurts to think about it. That would be cooler than chuck norris :D

But I think one of the purposes of the Paramilitary was to have a smaller blade in a full size handle. The fact that it has more handle than blade is why I like it so much. I don't want or need a huge blade, but I do want a full size handle.

Nope, sorry Impossible at any cost. Doesnt even matter that they are completely different locks, with nothing in common, or that the millie blade would stick way out of the paras handle...

The Geometry of the lock and stop pins just dont match, or line up, or anything... not possible for a fact!

Only way your ever going to get that is to have a custom blade made for a para, or cut down a millie handle.
