Millie question...

Okay guys, I got my first Millie (PE/Black G10 ver.) in the mail today and it's everything I've come to expect from Spyderco - big, sturdy, sharp as a laser and locks up like a bank vault - I'm pleased with my latest purchase.

Now out of the box, the action is a bit stiff and probably needs some breaking in, but I first tried to see if loosening the pivot screw would help. Now the strange thing was that when I did, the whole pin seems to slide back and forth and protruded from the clip side to the other - suffice to say I was surprised. So my question from the Millie afi's is if it's normal to have the pivot screw/pin slide back and forth like that?

Don't get me wrong, I love this knife and not planning on sending it in or anything - I'm just curious. Loosening it didn't have the desired affect of an easier opening anyway, so I've tightened it back down again to where it was before with no loss in its functionality. Guess a few hundred or so openings will loosen things up in time...

seems you loosened the pivot too much. I had the same issues when I got my millie NIB. I first tightened the pivot maybe a quarter turn then loosened it to the point I wanted.

Maybe a squirt of lubricant and a few opening/closing cycles should do it. I have a Millie that's seen a lot of use, still tight but very slick opening -- just a touch on the hole and it snaps into place. I don't remember any stiffness but I tend to ignore that until I've had a knife a while.

What i do with my new knives if theyre stiff is i remove the pivot bolt, pull the blade and washers out and clean them all with a dry paper towel then some rubbing alcahol. Clean inside the knife where the washers meet (the liners). Then reassemble and put the pivot back in and tighten it, but not tight enough to make all the metal pieces touch. Drop some oil and tighten it all up, then work it. Get it in the right spot(oh yeah and put BLUE loctite on the pivot SCREW before you put the screw in). Should solve it.

Don't ever tell a new guy to put loctite on a pivot.
Tell him blue loctite, NOT red loctite! :D

Definitely have to break it in a little. Open and close as Esav mentioned with a dribble of your favorite lubricant should work fine. Milies all open with a bit more force than your standard delica/endura. It does take a wee bit more thumb strength to get it open. Congrats though, beautiful knife.

Tiny print. Go into a store and buy loctite and use what they give you ... oops!
It's always best to give too much information than too little. :)
