So ive been doing alot of gaurds and whatnot and curious if anyone thinks a x-y table for a dremel would be good enough to mill the slot in gaurds or if I should look into a milling machine even tho Im pretty sure this is all they would be used for really.

Hi Will,

I'd vote look into a mill. If you chuck up your best burr and lean into a chunk of mild steel with a dremel, I don't think you'd make much progress. Might be just the ticket for tweeking things though. You may end up doing a lot of things with a mill that you wouldn't consider trying now.

Good luck with it, Craig

I tryed a lot of things. The best 2 I came up with were a drill and hand files and a mill. I finally bought a mill. Don't know how I did without it. If you do go with a mill get a collet set. That drill chuck that comes with most mills (inexpesive ones) wobbles. Here's a link to one like I have http://www.grizzly.com/products/category.aspx?key=480000
I have the G1006 2hp. Check Craigs list. I got mine used for $650.00 w/ collets and about 75 end mills

Yeah i guess time to start researchign and saving up in my piggybank. Never used a mill before so guess i got alot to read up on.

There are books available as an introduction to milling.
When I get a mill eventualy I'll get a book to go with it.

check into a mini mill if you are only going to mill guards and small parts. a buddy has an enco mini mill along with a full size mill and i use the mini mill if i ever need to cut a slot in a guard. the enco my buddy has is small enough to pick up and carry anywhere you need it.
