I'm a real begginer but I've got the bug. At this point I don't know how to run a milling machine or a lathe but I'm going to start reading and see if I can fine someone local to impart some knowledge. To begin with what type of machine do I start looking for to first cut tang slots in guards? I'm going to start reading but first I need to know what type of machine to use.

A mill, or a lathe with a milling attachment.

or a drill press and file,

or buy a pre slotted guard.

Start with a drill press and a centerpunch. Srcibe the area you need to cut out, draw a line up the middle of that and using a drillbit that is not quite as wide as your tang, centerpunch starting divots on that line that will just barely overlap, then starting with a chainsaw round file, then working up to a small square or rectangle file file out the remaining metal. Always clamp your work when drilling and put it in a vise when filing

Milling machines are expensive, and can get you seriously hurt if you do not know what you are doing. Learn how to do what you want with a file and a drill, then the milling machine will be a quicker more precise way of doing what you already know how to do

You might want to check you local community college; many of them still have machinest courses at night.

Thanks for the input. I know a milling machine is a little overboard for just cutting tang slots but I've did the drill press and file . I've learned a little better technique and it helps, harder metal is still a pain. I could use the milling machine for other projects if I can find a decent used one that I don't have to ship across the country. Thanks. hds
