Ok, I finally bought a benchtop mill. And without the help of my 14 year old football playing son it would have been a floor model :). It is one of them taiwanize green machines that is packed it cosmoline or some type of heavy grease. It has set at the store on display for a long time so lots of the grease is gone.

I have wiped off all the other I can and have it pretty clean. But it looks like it is time to disassemble the table and screws and clean and lub them. They move but are not smooth.

So what do I need to use to clean this junk off with? It is already in my shop (garage).

What type of grease or lubricant is recommended to use for reassemble after cleaning.

What other type of tune up tweaking etc. is recommended?

Any advise will be welcomed.

Thanks

Acetone and WD-40 both work great for cleaning off that gunk... but REMEMBER>>>>>> they are both very flamable!!!!!!!!! :(

Any lite grease will work.....you might want to buy some way lube. Any petrol place sells it....cheap oil for oiling your machine. Remember grease is for the heavy wear places and oil everywhere else... Just like your shotgun!! :)

Sounds like you got the same one as me. I used this stuff that smelt like fermented oranges. I believe it was called "Citrisol". It works like a hot damn and smells pretty good although not as nice smelling as WD40(I always thought someone should make a WD40 airfreshener). Make sure you spray it afterwards with WD40 to prevent rust.

Thanks guys.

I also got advise to not disassemble the table and all just clean and degrease the best you can and lub it up. :) Not disassembling it may be a good idea.

Way Oil???? anything else that will work. or is comparible to way oil. Is it heavy oil or light oil? I'm not sure it is available here and I really don't want to order it but I might.

Thanks

I pretty much use any open container of oil on bare surfaces on my mill. Heavier oils last longer but are more friction producing if the shop is cold.

I recently started using Way Oil (thanks Alan) and it makes the ways and screws much smoother. Kerosene works well for cleaning gunk off metal surfaces. I also like WD-40 for cleaning, but I avoid it for rust prevention and lubrication.
