Million-dollar question regarding the Tool Logic SL series knives...

A few months ago I purchased the (somewhat gimmicky but surprisingly effective) Tool Logic SL3 knife--you know, the one with the piggyback firesteel--and I'm having the hardest time trying to ascertain what kind of mystery steel it is. All I'm coming up with in my search is "stainless steel." (Yeah, thanks for the vagueness.)

Does anyone have a glorious clue as to what kind of steel goes into their SL series knives?

And I want to be clear, I'm not referring to the SL Pro Series, which says that the Pro series uses 420 J2 Stainless. http://www.toollogic.com/folders_section.htm

Can anyone help me out?

I haven't handled one, but it LOOKS like the same knife steel to me. To my knowledge, the pro series is more of a handle mod than a totally different knife. 420 J2 sounds about right. Just a guess on my part.

Welcome to the Forums!

I've got one, too. (Maybe it's a West Virginia thing ;) ) I really liked the concept. I would have to suppose that the steel is the 420 J2 they mention. The only other steel they list is AUS 8A type. I do know the set-up doesn't throw sparks very well. I have started fires with it, but with much more effort than a standard firesteel and carbon blade take. The whistle is also a little disappointing. But, all that said, it is a nice, compact package to have something for a PSK.

So both you guys think it's a 420 J2 too, huh? Well, that may be but I just don't see why the company wouldn't advertise that on the specs for the regular SL series if it really was the same steel as the higher priced Pro series. (Seems like it would be a major selling point as opposed to making it out to be a mystery steel. Maybe what you're paying for with the price difference [for the Pro series] is the "Tough Zytel Construction"?)

And yeah, I know what you mean about the sparks MacHete. I think it's just the blade notch that is to blame, however. I used the striker from my Light My Fire Scout and no problem, plenty of sparks. Then I used my modified hacksaw blade that I use for my magnesium block firestarters and, once again, sparks a'plenty. To be sure, when I'm in the woods I always bring my Light My Fire and/or Blastmatch and, as far as blades go, I have my SOG Seal Pup Elite, Cold Steel Roach Belly, & Leatherman Wave with me--but I thought I'd give this a go. Kinda like a fourth-string quarterback, if you know what I mean...

the early tool logic products (SL3, SL1/mini, credit card tool) were japanese manufactured, and made exclusive use of 420 stainless steel.
the SLPros are made in mainland China, as with the LED lights.
