Mineral oil for sharpening

Certainly. I've always used the closest oil to hand, never touched honing oil, but I always get a shaving sharp edge.

As long as it lubricates without drying or clogging it will be fine :)

I'd like to ask what exactly is mineral oil? I've heard about its uses for protecting carbon blades that may be used for food prep. Is it so that it is non toxic then? Is synthetic oil as in 0-40 engine oil the same as mineral oil?

My GATCO kit came with a bottle of "food grade" mineral oil. I bought a bottle of 3 in 1 with a more convenient spout. Both seem to work fine.

You can increase the effectiveness of mineral oil but cutting it with kerosene 2 or 3:1 (2 parts mineral oil to 1 part kerosene). Oil floats the swarf while the kerosene increases the cutting efficiency. I use this formula on my arkaksas and silicon carbide stones and it really makes a difference, especially with the drug store grade mineral oil which is used as a laxative and is somewhat thicker than the use specific grades like Norton's mineral oil.
